Sr./Principal R&D Electrical Engineer - Hybrid - Greater Chicago Medical Device - Permanent up to $175k base + 10% bonus

Please see the below requirements for a Principal Electrical Engineer to join a global med tech R&D organization developing next‑generation embedded technologies for safety‑critical systems. This role sits within a highly technical R&D engineering group responsible for the design, evolution, and modernization of complex, regulated electromechanical platforms. The team operates at the intersection of electrical, embedded, and system‑level design, and this role is ideal for a senior engineer who values technical ownership, rigor, and building hardware that must perform flawlessly in real‑world environments.

You'll play a key role in driving the electrical design and technical direction of battery‑powered embedded platforms, working hands‑on across architecture, board‑level design, performance optimization, and feature development. This role is execution‑focused and ownership‑driven, spanning requirements through verification and manufacturing support, with close collaboration across cross‑functional R&D teams and involvement in mentoring and rigorous technical documentation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
  • 10+ years of hands‑on experience building embedded, electromechanical hardware
  • Proven track record designing and delivering complex embedded electronic systems
  • Strong depth in analog and digital circuit design at the board level
  • Experience developing designs with EMI/EMC considerations front and center
  • Proficiency with Altium for schematic capture and PCB development
  • Senior‑level technical ownership, with experience independently driving complex electrical efforts
  • Background in battery‑powered systems; lithium‑ion experience highly valued
  • Mixed‑signal design experience; RF exposure is a plus, not a requirement
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW or similar tools for testing, data acquisition, or validation
  • Experience working within regulated environments; medical preferred, aerospace or defense also highly relevant
  • Strong documentation habits and comfort working within structured design control processes
