Our client, a globally recognized leader in materials science and specialty chemicals, is seeking an exceptional Principal Research Scientist to join their advanced R&D center in Seattle, Washington, US . This role is pivotal in driving innovation in polymer chemistry, focusing on the synthesis, characterization, and application of novel polymeric materials for cutting-edge technologies. The successful candidate will lead challenging research projects, from conceptualization through to proof-of-concept, and will play a key role in shaping the company's future product pipeline. This is a hands-on laboratory position requiring deep expertise in polymer synthesis, structure-property relationships, and advanced characterization techniques.
Responsibilities include:
Designing and executing research strategies for the development of new polymers with tailored properties. Leading independent research projects, managing timelines, resources, and experimental design. Synthesizing novel monomers and polymers using various polymerization techniques (e.g., free radical, anionic, cationic, condensation). Characterizing synthesized polymers using advanced analytical techniques such as GPC/SEC, NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, TEM, and rheology. Investigating structure-property relationships to optimize material performance for specific applications. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product development, engineering, and marketing, to transition research discoveries into commercial products. Mentoring junior scientists and technicians, fostering a culture of scientific rigor and innovation. Staying current with the latest scientific literature, patents, and industry trends in polymer science and related fields. Presenting research findings at internal meetings and external scientific conferences. Contributing to intellectual property generation through patent filings.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field. Minimum of 10 years of relevant industrial research experience, with a proven track record of innovation and successful product development. Extensive hands-on experience with various polymerization techniques and in-depth knowledge of polymer characterization methods. Strong understanding of polymer physics and mechanics. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to lead complex research projects and mentor scientific staff. Strong publication record and/or patent portfolio. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced research environment. Experience with computational modeling of polymers is a plus.
