Our client, a leading pharmaceutical company committed to advancing human health, is seeking a highly accomplished Principal Scientist specializing in Drug Discovery to join their state-of-the-art research facility in Houston, Texas, US . This senior role is central to identifying and advancing novel therapeutic candidates through the early stages of the drug discovery pipeline. You will be responsible for designing and executing innovative research strategies, leading multidisciplinary teams, and contributing significantly to the company's pipeline of innovative medicines. Key responsibilities include conceptualizing and implementing cutting-edge research programs, identifying novel drug targets, developing and validating assays, and utilizing advanced screening technologies to discover hit compounds. You will play a critical role in lead optimization, working closely with medicinal chemists, biologists, pharmacologists, and toxicologists to advance promising candidates towards preclinical development. The Principal Scientist will be expected to stay abreast of the latest scientific advancements in their field, publish findings in high-impact journals, and present research at international conferences. This role requires a deep understanding of molecular biology, pharmacology, assay development, and drug discovery processes, with a strong emphasis on a specific therapeutic area (e.g., oncology, immunology, neuroscience). The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership skills, a proven ability to mentor junior scientists, and a strong publication record. You will collaborate extensively with internal research groups and external academic and industry partners. This is a laboratory-based position requiring hands-on involvement in experimental design and execution. We are looking for a highly motivated and results-oriented scientist with a passion for translating scientific discoveries into life-changing therapies.

Responsibilities:

Lead and design innovative drug discovery research programs within a specified therapeutic area. Identify and validate novel drug targets and pathways for therapeutic intervention. Develop and optimize high-throughput screening (HTS) assays and other discovery tools. Oversee hit identification and lead optimization efforts for small molecule or biologic drug candidates. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including medicinal chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and DMPK. Interpret complex experimental data, draw meaningful conclusions, and formulate next steps. Mentor and guide junior scientists, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment. Stay current with the latest scientific literature, technologies, and industry trends. Author and present research findings at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications. Contribute to the strategic direction of the drug discovery portfolio. Manage research budgets and resource allocation effectively.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related life science discipline. Minimum of 8 years of post-doctoral and industry experience in drug discovery. Demonstrated track record of successfully advancing drug candidates from discovery to early development. Expertise in a specific therapeutic area (e.g., oncology, immunology, CNS). Proven experience in assay development, HTS, and lead optimization. Strong understanding of modern drug discovery technologies and methodologies. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong publication record in reputable scientific journals. Ability to manage multiple projects and research priorities effectively. Experience with biostatistics and data analysis tools. Hands-on laboratory experience is essential.
