A Day in the Life

As a Principal Tooling Engineer, you will play a critical role in supporting the design, development, and implementation of injection mold tooling used to manufacture life-changing medical technologies.

In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing Engineering, Process Development, Quality, and external tooling suppliers to deliver high-quality tooling solutions that support scalable, reliable production. You will lead the development, procurement, and lifecycle management of injection mold tooling used in manufacturing operations. Your work will directly impact the manufacturing of medical devices that improve and save lives around the world.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead injection mold tooling development projects from concept through release to production.
  • Select and manage external mold vendors, including supplier selection, purchase order placement, and technical collaboration.
  • Conduct design reviews of injection molds, ensuring designs meet product, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Review and interpret mold flow simulation results to validate tool design and processing strategies.
  • Participate in First-Off Tool (FOT) trials at mold suppliers to verify tool performance and readiness for production.
  • Develop and complete mold verification reports to ensure tools meet specification and quality requirements.
  • Release and maintain mold drawings and 3D models within engineering systems.
  • Implement serialization and tracking systems for mold tooling and components.
  • Develop and release preventive maintenance (PM) plans for molds to ensure long-term reliability and performance.
  • Establish and maintain tooling storage, handling, and maintenance processes within the manufacturing site.
  • Partner with molding and manufacturing engineers to troubleshoot mold tooling issues and drive continuous improvement.
  • Design, develop, and implement industrial machinery, tools, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and machine attachments required for production or experimental use.
  • Consider design factors such as accessibility, cost efficiency, mobility, durability, and performance requirements.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM tools to design tooling and support manufacturing solutions.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree with Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience OR
  • Masters Degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR
  • PhD with 3 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with injection mold tooling design and development
  • Experience working with tooling vendors and mold makers
  • Knowledge of mold flow simulation and interpretation
  • Experience supporting First-Off Tool (FOT) trials and tooling validation
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance planning for tooling
  • Experience troubleshooting molding or tooling issues in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, CAD/CAM, or similar 3D design tools
  • Experience in regulated industries such as medical device, aerospace, or automotive manufacturing
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for tooling

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R.

  • 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
