About Betterment

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing, savings and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission, to empower people to build wealth with confidence and ease.  We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/ week in-office, with no required office days during the summer and winter holidays).

About the Role

User Trust is central to the security, reliability, and integrity of Betterment's financial products and the customers who depend on them. We design risk and identity measures, determine when and how to introduce controls in key customer journeys (signup, login, funding, withdrawals), and build the tooling that helps Customer Experience and Operations teams keep 1M+ customers safe while without compromising the quality of their investing and cash experience.

As the Product Manager for User Trust, you'll own the roadmap that ties our controls and tooling together, define how we assess risk and introduce (or remove) verification interventions across the customer journey, and set clear measures of impact across risk reduction, customer experience, and regulatory expectations.

You'll navigate multiple concurrent projects from definition through launch, moving fluidly between strategy and implementation details — working closely with Engineering, Operations, Security, Compliance, Legal, CX, and other product teams to make our platform more resilient and trustworthy over time.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

New York City: $121,000-143,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.

A Day in the Life

Own the product roadmap across identity verification, authentication, device risk, behavioral signals, and account security for Betterment’s retail investing and cash products.

Identify and prioritize opportunities to increase security and integrity while minimizing friction in signup, funding, withdrawals, login, and sensitive profile changes.

Partner with Operations, Security Engineering, Customer Experience, and Compliance to design, implement, and iterate on KYC/KYB, 2FA, risk scoring, transaction monitoring, and case management controls.

Work closely with engineering to define solutions and tradeoffs, while actively questioning assumptions and default approaches before converging on an implementation.

Lead cross-functional delivery with design, engineering, analytics, and operations from problem definition through discovery, specs, launch, and iteration.

Run experiments and tests to calibrate trust controls, including where to require additional verification, how to tune thresholds, and how to communicate risk decisions.

Define and track success metrics that balance platform integrity with customer experience, including financial risk, login success rates, and conversion.

Build deep insight into customers and internal operators through research, risk and incident reviews, CX shadowing, and market and competitive analysis.

What We’re Looking For

Product management experience building products in fintech, financial services, or other regulated / risk-heavy domains (e.g., payments, security, marketplaces).

Strong analytical and data-informed decision-making skills, comfortable using metrics, experiments, and qualitative inputs (CX tickets, risk case data, user research) to set direction.

Ability to balance fraud/risk reduction with customer experience and growth, and clearly communicate the tradeoffs you’re making.

Proven success leading cross-functional work with engineering, design, CX, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Security to ship complex features.

Comfort with concepts like KYC/AML, identity verification, authentication, ACH and card risk, account takeover, and device intelligence (or a demonstrated ability to ramp quickly).

Excellent written and verbal communication and storytelling skills; able to create clear specs and influence stakeholders at multiple levels.

Strong sense of ownership and a track record of driving work forward in ambiguous environments while maintaining a high bar for quality and customer trust.
