Job Description

Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

As a talented Propulsion Structural Engineer, you will support the design, justification, testing and validation of the mechanical structure of the propulsion system and its main components.

Key Responsibilities / Tasks:

In your capacity as a Propulsion Structural Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include:

  • Reviewing static & dynamic load inputs, material properties, test data, and component requirements to properly set up structural analysis cases.
  • Performing static and dynamic mechanical analysis, with detailed validation methodologies and appropriate justifications of the overall propulsion system using the appropriate applicable standards.
  • Perform fracture mechanics evaluations, crack growth analyses, and damage tolerance assessments. Conduct fatigue life predictions for welded joints, fasteners, and high-cycle/low-cycle load environments.
  • Support anomaly investigations by performing root cause analyses on structural damage and/or justifications of non-conformities
  • Support design reviews, verification activities, and engineering decision-making with sound analytical reasoning.

What we would love to see from you:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 3+ years of related experience
  • Strong understanding of structural design and analysis principles.
  • Strong understanding of development and qualification space standards for pressurized components (e.g., AIAA S-080-1998)
  • Ability to conduct structural analysis using classical hand-calculations and finite element techniques
  • Fundamental knowledge of structure strength, stability, and fatigue failure mechanisms
  • Proficiency with FEA tools such as Hypermesh/Hyperview as pre-processing and Nastran/Optistruct as solver.
  • CAD proficiency (NX experience is a plus)
  • Programming skills (preferably Python or VBA) for automation and process optimization.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
