Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal R&D Scientist to join a dynamic team in a regulated laboratory environment. This role focuses on driving process transformation, operational excellence, and data-driven decision-making within R&D and laboratory operations.
The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in analytical sciences, chemistry, or microbiology, along with hands-on experience in lab systems, data analytics, and workflow optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support process transformation initiatives to improve lab efficiency, scalability, and performance
- Analyze laboratory workflows and implement operational improvements
- Define, track, and interpret key performance metrics (throughput, cycle time, error rates)
- Utilize tools such as LIMS, ELN, and dashboards for data capture, analysis, and reporting
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive data-driven decision-making
- Ensure compliance with regulated environments (FDA, ISO, GLP/GMP)
- Troubleshoot complex laboratory workflows and technical challenges
- Communicate insights and recommendations to stakeholders effectively
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Analytical Sciences, or related field
- OR Associate’s degree in a life sciences field with 15+ years of lab experience
- 5–10+ years of hands-on laboratory experience in a regulated environment (pharma, consumer products, etc.)
- Strong foundation in analytical sciences and laboratory operations
- Proven experience in process improvement / operational excellence
- Strong data analytics and KPI tracking experience
- Experience with lab systems such as LIMS, ELN, or data visualization tools
- Knowledge of FDA, ISO, GLP/GMP regulations
- Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS or PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Sciences, Microbiology, or related field
- Experience in tobacco, nicotine, aerosol, or regulated consumer product testing
- Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation (chromatography, spectroscopy, automated lab systems)
- Experience with digital lab transformation initiatives
- Background in multi-site or cross-functional leadership projects

- This is a hands-on, onsite role requiring full-time presence in Richmond, VA
