Join Cloudflare’s Research Team to tackle challenging problems in security, privacy, and scalable systems, contributing to a better Internet.

Your Role

Here’s what you will be doing:

  • Solving difficult problems in security, privacy, and systems at scale through engineering, data analysis, open source software development, protocol design, and implementation of primitives.
  • Conducting measurement and analysis alongside development efforts.
  • Being matched to suitable projects aligned with ongoing research directions or proposing novel ideas to improve Cloudflare or the Internet.
  • Working on advanced cryptography, hardware isolation, privacy and identity balance, network observability, formal methods at scale, and AI applications in distributed systems.

About You

The company is looking for candidates with:

  • Evidence of tackling hard or open-ended problems.
  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed research, open-source contributions, or standards development appropriate to their training level.
  • Experience communicating research ideas via papers, pre-prints, standards documents, blogs, or similar media.
  • Ability to work in systems-level programming languages such as Rust, C, or Go.
  • Passion for debugging and ensuring system reliability.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration workflows and source control systems like Gitlab or Github.
  • Willingness and ability to share knowledge effectively.
  • Knowledge or experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Computer networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, BGP, QUIC, etc.) and related algorithms.
  • Machine learning analysis, ideally in systems or network optimization.
  • Authentication protocols, applied cryptography, PKI, and SSL/TLS.
  • Operating or distributed systems analysis or development.
  • Measurement for network and computer systems.
  • Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python.
  • Bonus points for:
  • Proven track record of independently driving projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working in groups or with multiple stakeholders.
  • Fluency across multiple programming languages.
  • Ability to commit to a 12-week summer internship.
  • Availability to work in-office 3-4 days per week in Austin, TX.
