Duties Description The

Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities (IBR) is the research arm of OPWDD. We are seeking a highly motivated, creative veterinarian to join our team of research scientists engaging in various research protocols and funded studies which involve animal models. This part-time Veterinarian will provide coverage when IBR’s Attending Veterinarian (AV) is unavailable and provide on-going support to the overall functioning of the department through .20 percent time. Hours would increase as much as they are needed and as agreeable when AV coverage was needed due to vacation/illness/personal needs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The incumbent will act as “back up” Veterinarian for the NYS OPWDD Institute for Basic Research (IBR) in Developmental Disabilities Vivarium/Laboratory Animal Resource Center. The incumbent will be available for consultations or veterinarian services when the AV and facilities manager are unavailable. In this position, the incumbent will work with and support the AV in responsibilities including but not limited to review and approve animal protocols submitted by the principal investigators; participate as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); in the absence of the AV, supervise the LARC staff and actively engage in inspecting the animal colony and ensure it maintains regulatory standards.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES not limited to: When providing AV coverage, the prospective candidate will be responsible for all aspects of veterinary duties including veterinary technical work, facility management, compliance and administrative responsibilities. These duties specifically include but are not limited to: Veterinary/facility rounds, attending at least two IACUC monthly meetings and duties and inspections, investigator consultations and protocols, training seminars and staff meetings. Working with the AV’s oversite and planning, potentially assist with any or all of activities detailed below, time appropriate:

  • Conduct animal census; biosecurity testing and sample collection; review animal orders and placements; facilitate special projects within animal colony; weekend on-call/emergency cases• Facilitate vendor communication, conduct walk-through and preventative maintenance inspections• Prepare, place and review room logs; review for temperature/humidity trends; prepare order requisitions.
  • Update/monitor semi-annual inspection of animal facilities inspection visit list; facilitate occupational health forms for animal users; facilitate processing of USDA annual report, DEA registration, NYS DOH certificate, OLAW report and NYS Controlled substances license; facilitate recordkeeping for use of controlled substances.
  • Support the AV and participate to prepare and update as needed SOP and guidelines as needed (biosecurity, disaster plan, etc.)• Support the AV and when asked, prepare purchase requests for standing orders and review and follow up on preventative maintenance schedule, as applicable, approve, when necessary, due to AV absence. Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Ph.D. and seven years of professional research experience in an appropriate field.ANDVeterinary Degree from an accredited United States college or university

Comments • Please note that starting salary for this title reflects the Downstate adjustment.

Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 35 ($161,476) and Downstate adjustment ($4,000). Downstate adjustment is added to the job rate ($193,823).
