Job Summary

Research Scientist III serves in a key supportive role for the leadership and management of research efforts in the field of islet transplantation at BSWRI. The position involves collaboration with other investigators, research scientists, and clinicians in a supportive role (e.g., Co-Investigator) to submit grant applications for extramural funding, disseminate study results in high impact journals and present at local, national, and international conferences. The position provides leadership, direction and continuity to determine the research direction of the institute.

Essential Functions Of The Role

Plans and initiates independent translational research projects on islet transplantation as a beta cell replacement therapy.

Collaborates with research investigators, research scientists and other clinicians in the leadership, planning and organization of research proposals to secure external funding at the federal, foundation, or other level. This may include collaborative or multisite proposals.

Serves as a co-investigator on large, collaborative investigator-initiated or industry-sponsored research studies and leads the successful execution of all study deliverables.

Supports and leads the dissemination of research in high impact, peer-reviewed journals and presents research findings at local, national and international conferences. This may include efforts related to writing, analysis, or content expertise.

Leads collaborative efforts between the Institute, clinical service lines, and greater community. This includes attending or presenting at seminars, journal clubs, etc

Leads teaching and mentoring activities of students, residents, postdoctoral research fellows, and other research scientists. This may include opportunities both internal and external to the Institute.

Assures the scientific integrity of the research and protection/sharing of data.

Participates as a leader in internal committees, administration, goal setting, strategic planning, and budgeting for the institute.

Key Success Factors

Five years of relevant experience after postdoctoral fellowship(s), or six years of experience in research laboratory/department, clinical laboratory/department, or animal care facility. Preferred area of experience includes immunology, transplantation, islet cell biology, molecular cell biology etc.

Knowledge of cGMP/cGTP/cGLP operations according to the regulations by the Food and Drug Administration will be a plus.

Strong, consistent and successful history of supporting grant submissions. This includes programmatic, center-based, or system-level collaborations.

Strong publication record in high-impact and peer-reviewed journals. This includes first-author or co-author submissions.

Strong history of dissemination and presentation of study findings at local, national and international conferences.

Knowledge of research methodology and study execution.

Knowledge of key safety, regulatory and compliance requirements for work performed.

Brings a unique skillset or knowledge that will significantly contribute to the research program(s), research institute and collaborators.

Extensive history of mentoring research students, post docs or key study personnel.

Demonstrated leadership and excellent communication skills.

Demonstrated history of managing multi-disciplinary research teams and collaborative efforts.
