Job Summary

To perform assignments, requiring advanced working knowledge of scientific methods in a specific discipline and in such areas as research, design or experimental testing. Responsible for assignments that require the technical knowledge to modify or adapt procedures and to meet special research requirements. Designs, assembles and operates equipment used in research. Performs detailed analyses, tests and operations. May prepare technical reports, computer programs, and project plans. May assist engineers or faculty members with specific phases of research projects. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in a field directly related to specified research area and two (2) years of directly applicable experience conducting research related to the specified field of study.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with productive and time-efficient coordination of lab management duties, primary research duties, and mentorship duties.
  • Primary research experience in environmental microbiology, specifically in the fields of self-healing bioconcrete and biorecycling.
  • Experience with mentorship of individual and teams of junior scientists.
  • Experience with lab operation management, including development and implementation of lab safety SOPs, collaboration with university safety staff to ensure best practices, purchasing, inventory management, and development and organization of laboratory training sessions in safety and scientific methods.

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises assigned research projects.
  • Mentors junior scientists (undergraduate students, graduate students, and other lab personnel) on experiments with biosafety level 1 and 2 bacteria.
  • Mentors junior scientists in research and writing endeavors.
  • Assembles and analyzes research data. Assists in preparation of manuscripts.
  • Coordinates laboratory purchasing as needed.
  • Coordinates materials transfer agreements and shipping of research materials to investigators outside the university.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
