The Polymer and Composite Processing Group invites applications for Research Scientist position to lead and conduct research in advanced polymer processing technologies, with a particular focus on polymer flow processing, sheet thermoforming and multi-material component manufacturing for industrial application and translation. The Scientist is required to support both industry and research projects where process innovation, material characterization and structural testing are needed.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Develop research topics from the study of process-related issues, conduct root-cause-analysis of defects, failures and material behaviour, etc. so as to resolve manufacturing challenges through deep scientific understanding of materials and processes.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to enhance the group"s capabilities in polymer component design and advanced manufacturing processes.
- Innovate solutions to enhance polymer processing technologies (e.g., thermoforming, extrusion compounding, injection moulding) with the aim of improving lightweight performance, reducing embodied carbon footprint for sustainable manufacturing.
- Drive technology foresight and explore emerging areas, including the development of AI-enabled process intelligence.
- Formulate scientific research proposals aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic workplan to secure new competitive funding.
- Prepare project proposals, technical presentations and reports for customers and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate strong domain knowledge in advanced manufacturing and be able to provide innovative solutions to industry problems.
- Deliver technology disclosures or patents of value to real applications in both industry and research projects.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D in Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials Science & Engineering or other relevant disciplines
- Possess in-depth expertise in polymer and composite processing, coupled with strong hands-on skills in equipment operation.
- Good track record of scientific publications in top journals or conferences
- Excellent technical presentation and scientific writing skills.
- Strong experimentalist equipped with some basic FE skills in process or structural simulation is preferred.
- Proficient in CAD and CAE tools, such as SolidWorks, with the ability to support both design and analysis tasks.
- Confident in engaging with customers and vendors, including managing project negotiations and technical discussions.
- Prior experience with aviation quality systems, regulatory requirements, product or process development will be advantageous.
