Position Highlights

A Researcher/Scientist III position is available to qualified applicants in the laboratory of Dr. Janko Nikolich in the Department of Immunobiology, College of Medicine, and University of Arizona. This position will provide expertise and perform experiments to define immune mechanisms underlying the development of accelerated immune aging in mice and/or humans, including geriatric syndromes affecting individuals and/or animals living, and aging, with cytomegalovirus and/or with ART-controlled HIV. A competitive candidate will possess demonstrable expertise in at least one of the following areas: cellular immunology, virology (especially prior work with HIV), molecular biology, or biochemistry. Candidates should be amenable to training others to experimentally validate new hypotheses emerging from this laboratory's work. An ideal candidate will possess expertise in cellular immunology and one other of the above areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Creates, conceptualizes, and executes research endeavors, evaluates the data, and keeps appropriate records of all research activities.

Cross-correlate and integrate results from different types of analysis and report on findings. Together with PI, formulate hypotheses on new pathways underlying immune aging.

Independently apply advanced wet-lab techniques in immunology and virology to conduct experiments investigating microbial pathogens and the intersection of aging and infections on biological outcomes.

Applies extensive knowledge to tasks and demonstrates proficiency in using university systems and departmental tools.

Review and evaluate current research developments/literature to inform research design and refine experimental approaches.

Contribute to scientific discussions by presenting experimental findings or progress updates, and attend mandatory lab meetings.

May co-author publications and co-present findings with principal investigators at conferences or meetings.

Participate and/or attend departmental functions and lectures.

In collaboration with the PI, will assist in developing and securing research funding and writing grant proposals.

Perform assigned lab duties to assist in the maintenance of stock reagents or the general operation of the lab, and various other duties or projects as assigned.

Train and oversee undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and other personnel in a wide range of essential procedures and techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic understanding of virus-host interactions and immune aging.

Eager to perform novel multidisciplinary experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.

Five (5) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing molecular biology, flow cytometry, and mouse model work.
  • PhD degree in related field.
