Risk Developer (number 2 to CRO) – Leading Multi-Strat Hedge Fund – Excellent Compensation + Benefits

My client, a leading global hedge fund, is seeking an experienced Risk Developer to join its New York office.

This is a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic, high-impact Risk Management team, acting as the technical right-hand partner to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO). The role will focus on building and owning critical risk technology and infrastructure that directly supports firm-wide risk oversight, portfolio construction, and senior management decision-making.

In this role, you will play a key part in developing scalable, full-stack risk technology solutions that reflect the CRO’s strategic vision for risk. These systems will power risk analytics, reporting, and performance attribution tools used across multiple asset classes. You will work closely with the CRO, risk managers, and technologists to ensure high performance, clean design, and clear communication of complex data workflows.

You’ll be joining a firm that values smart risk-taking, collaborative problem-solving, and ownership-driven innovation—providing you with the autonomy to shape impactful solutions while serving as a trusted technical partner to senior risk leadership.

The ideal candidate will be an expert-level Python developer (or have demonstrated mastery in C#, C++, or Java with readiness to pivot to Python), with strong computer science fundamentals and a proven track record of building analytical or front office tools in financial services.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain risk infrastructure, applications, and reports used by the Risk Management team and the CRO.
• Act as the primary technical counterpart to the CRO on risk analytics, reporting, and tooling initiatives.
• Build full-stack solutions leveraging modern data platforms, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps tooling.
• Optimize data handling and system performance through expert-level programming and efficient architectural design.
• Collaborate with the broader technology, risk, and investment teams to ensure systems meet business needs and scale across the platform.
• Communicate technical solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior risk leadership.

Requirements:

• 8+ years of overall software development experience, including 4+ years building Risk and/or Front Office analytics tools.
• Expert level in Python
• Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals including memory management, concurrency, and data structures.
• Solid experience with SQL-based and/or cloud-native databases such as PostgreSQL and Snowflake.
• Familiarity with portfolio construction concepts, risk metrics (e.g., VaR), and performance attribution methodologies.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex ideas to varied audiences, including the CRO and senior stakeholders.
