The Risk Specialist must be proficient in Property & Casualty with emphasis on large manufacturing, warehousing and Course of Construction type perils and must develop a comprehensive understanding of insured operations to assess the level of risk associated with surveyed exposures and provides underwriters with clear, well documented risk assessment reports that include complete analysis and grading.

The Risk Specialist also delivers formal and informal training and education to underwriting staff to support the development of technical expertise and sound risk judgment. Decision making and problem solving require a high degree of technical proficiency and professional judgment, with consultation expected when uncertainty exists. Accuracy is critical, as errors may result in significant financial impact and reputational risk to the organization.

How you will create impact:

  • Conducting risk evaluations through site surveys and file reviews to identify loss exposures, hazards, controls, and regulatory compliance while developing a detailed understanding of insured operations
  • Assessing the scope and effectiveness of risk controls and safety management practices, and proposing advanced, practical risk management solutions
  • Consulting with clients, brokers, and underwriters on loss control and prevention practices through collaborative fact finding and solution development
  • Preparing clear, comprehensive risk evaluation and assessment reports with analysis, grading, and underwriting recommendations to support risk selection and pricing decisions
  • Delivering consultative risk improvement services by reviewing existing loss prevention programs and developing actionable improvement plans
  • Developing and delivering technical training, education sessions, library articles, and learning materials for clients, brokers, underwriters, and staff
  • Supporting risk engineering program development by contributing subject matter expertise, assisting with pilot initiatives, and providing operational feedback to management
  • Maintaining strong client, broker, and internal relationships while acting as a risk management expert, mentor, and industry participant focused on service excellence and market opportunity growth

To join our team:

  • Degree or diploma in Engineering, Applied Science, or a related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience
  • Completion of recognized professional insurance designations, including CIP and CRM
  • Technical education covering fire protection, building construction, sprinkler systems, security alarms, industrial processes, liability exposures, life safety, and fleet safety
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience within the insurance industry
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, decision making, organizational, and attention to detail skills
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, customer service, change management, and technology skills

What you need to know:

  • You will be subject to a Background check as a condition of employment, in the event you are the successful candidate.
  • This role involves direct contact with clients and/or service providers in their environment.
  • You are required to have a valid driver’s license and insurance.
  • Work will primarily be in Southern Ontario and 5% travel outside of Ontario.
