ROPES TECHNICIAN (STARSHIP) - TEMPORARY
The Ropes Access Technician plays a vital role in supporting SpaceX’s Starship operations team by executing safe, innovative ropes access solutions in complex, high-stakes environments. This hands-on position involves the precise setup, maintenance, and operation of access systems essential to Starship assembly, testing, and repairs, ensuring the team meets mission-critical objectives with accuracy and safety. By performing technical tasks under supervision, collaborating with engineering and operations teams, participating in qualification training programs, and adhering to stringent safety protocols, the Ropes Access Technician contributes to operational efficiency and the broader success of Starship’s mission to advance human space exploration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluate and develop safe ropes access solutions in new and changing environments
Manage communication, equipment integrity, and process guidelines required for safe ropes access operations.
Climb in a variety of environmental conditions to set up ropes access for teammate.
Haul team members and equipment using a variety of ropes access configurations.
Operate within and enforce SPRAT and IRATA guidelines.
Train team members proper use of Ropes Access solutions.
Develop rigging for large assemblies
Work at heights on temporary or permanent work access solutions
Operate personnel platforms (boom lifts, scissor lifts, etc.)
Read and interpret engineering drawings and work instructions
Perform work according to procedures, specifications, and test instructions
Collaborate with engineers to develop work access solutions
Ensure all production services are performed on time, safely and in a professional manner
Support heavy transport or crane operations when not supporting ropes access duties.
POSITION DETAILS:
This is a temporary position with SpaceX for the duration stated, subject to change with minimal notice based on business needs. Temporary employees who successfully complete the assignment may be eligible for conversion to full-time roles.
LENGTH OF POSITION: 3 months
LOCATION: Brownsville, TX
SHIFT: Must be available for all shifts (day shift, 6 AM - 6 PM or night shift, 6 PM - 6 AM), overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalency certificate
1+ years of experience on a critical lift team or a logistics/transport team
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
IRATA or SPRAT Ropes Access Level 3 Certification
Perform mechanical or welding work on gas, electrical and secondary structures systems when not performing ropes access duties
Experience in the aerospace industry, aviation, military, oil & gas, or other high-reliability operating environment
Knowledge of pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices, mechanical and electrical systems
Skill in operating and manipulating machinery and various hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity
Ability to use precision measuring instruments
Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment
Proficient with computers and the ability to use MS Office
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Stand: Up to 6 hours per day
Sit: Up to 6 hours per day
Push/Pull: Up to 75lbs. (unassisted) 30 minutes to 1 hour per day
Overhead reach: Up to 6 hours per day
Walk: Up to 6 hours per day
Lift/Carry: Up to 50lbs. (unassisted) 1-2 hours per day
Climb (ladder/stairs): Up to 6 hours per day
Kneel/Crouch: Up to 3 hours per day
Upper body twist: Up to 10 hours per day
Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees: 6 hours or greater per day
Candidate must be capable of safely working at heights (up to 500ft), in confined spaces, using an air purifying respirator, and performing the physical requirements of the job listed in the job description. Candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical to confirm these capabilities, which may include a medical history review
