Job Description

## About This Opportunity

Abbott is a global healthcare leader that helps people live more fully at all stages of life. We're looking for a Scientist 1 in Applied Research to join our Biologics Department in Carlsbad, California. This is a hands-on role focused on mammalian cell culture experiments in support of m. Ab process development and manufacturing.

## What You'll Be Doing

You'll conduct suspension mammalian cell culture using disposable technologies and perform bioreactor operation and process development for mammalian suspension cells. Your day-to-day work will include cloning CHO cell lines, maintaining mammalian cell lines, processing cell culture sample analysis, and performing data analysis. You'll work across scales from shake flasks to pilot-scale SUB systems up to 250L, providing technical support to optimize mammalian cell culture in 0.5L to 250L bioreactors.

Beyond the bench work, you'll handle lab maintenance support, including inventory and purchasing, equipment upkeep, and feedstock provision for the Biotech Process R&D team. Under general supervision, you'll execute preclinical scientific research and development in collaboration with others on projects of moderate complexity. This includes conducting investigations, detecting problems in more complicated processes, and learning to apply new knowledge to routine maintenance and lab safety.

You'll operate complex laboratory equipment and perform routine maintenance and repair work, interfacing with contracted repair technicians as needed. Documentation is important here—you'll write technical reports and cost estimates as you develop your work. You'll also be responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system, understanding federal and other regulations including QSR's, ISO, ISO 13485, and CMDR requirements. Your work will demonstrate commitment to the development, implementation, and effectiveness of the Alere Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.

## What We're Looking For

You'll need a BS in biology, biochemistry, or a related field with laboratory coursework directly applicable to these duties. A minimum of three years of experience in these areas is required, with particular skills and knowledge in the field of specialty for the department assigned. Strong cell culture experience and excellent aseptic technique are essential.

We need someone who has worked with bioreactors and thrives as a team player and collaborator with the ability to listen and communicate clearly and timely. You should demonstrate strong organizational and technical problem-solving skills, with the demonstrated ability to think and act independently, accept supervision, work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment, critically analyze data, and proactively solve problems. You'll also need to be able to work on rotating weekends.

## Preferred Experience

While not required, we'd love to hear if you have an MS in biology, biochemistry, or a related field with laboratory coursework. Experience with upstream process development of monoclonal antibodies and downstream process of m. Ab production is valuable. Knowledge of different feeding strategies for m. Ab production and working knowledge of cloning mammalian cell lines—preferably CHO for m. Ab secretion—would strengthen your candidacy.

Familiarity with key experimental techniques including HPLC, ELISA, SDS

  • PAGE, Western Blot, and FACS is helpful, as is Ig. G purification experience. We also value strong oral and written communication skills, and we're looking for independent, collaborative self-starters with the ability to make appropriate quality-related decisions in real time. Process-oriented, logical, analytical, meticulous, and highly organized individuals who can analyze data and implement solutions will thrive here. The ability to work effectively within a team environment while satisfying individual responsibilities and objectives is important.
