What You'll Be Doing

Scientist II – Analytical Chemist is a professional who works under the direction of the Principal Scientist or Director to promote R&D projects. Working in a dynamic team of skilled scientists and engineers, your work will translate fundamental science to a commercial device, with attention on quantitative analysis and device performance. A Scientist II will run routine analysis to support team efforts in developing a cannabis breathalyzer device, and they will help plan and execute research experiments to test prototype device components and guide product development. You will be expected to prepare, process, and analyze material samples, and formulate sound conclusions to inform decisions in our device development. You will work alongside other scientists and engineers, sharing experience and generating new ideas in a highly cross-functional and interdisciplinary team.

Technical Duties

  • Prepare liquid samples, operate instrumentation, and analyze data using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS, LC-MS/MS) techniques. Report data and results to internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare liquid or thermal desorption (TD) samples for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), operate and maintain instrumentation, and analyze data. Report data and results to internal stakeholders.
  • Understand principles of liquid and gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy to recognize errors and issues in standard operation and in data analysis.
  • Perform routine upkeep, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting for instrument performance issues when necessary.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of consumables and supplies needed for instrumentation.
  • As needed, develop new methods for analysis and validate processes. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), write new SOPs when necessary.
  • As needed, perform untargeted analysis and investigate unknown chemical materials using standard laboratory techniques.
  • Test performance on prototype devices and sensors. Apply analytical approaches and validation methods for assessing accuracy and precision of products in development.
  • Provide expertise and innovative problem-solving to products currently in development. In collaboration with peers and supervisors, plan new areas of study and execute careful experiments accordingly.

  • Both independently and in collaboration with peers and supervisors, design and execute research methods, protocols, and procedures, maintaining a high level of attention to detail and thorough documentation.
  • Be accountable for laboratory safety of self and others. Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and working with hazardous materials and wastes.
  • Effectively communicate and report data to internal stakeholders, prepare presentations that describe experimental approaches, technical methodologies, and sound conclusions.
  • Proactively participate in laboratory compliance and audit processes. Demonstrate good laboratory citizenship.
  • Be punctual, manage time, coordinate instrumentation schedules, and meet deadlines.
  • Work cohesively in a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. Be prepared to both contribute expertise and prior experience and to learn new approaches from peers.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements and technologies in analytical techniques to enhance research methodologies. Think critically and creatively in applying known approaches to new products and devices.
  • Professionally represent company values and goals.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to meet evolving research needs.

What You'll Bring To The Table

  • MS/MA in Chemistry, Materials, Biology Science or Engineering with 3+ years of lab experience OR BS/BA in Chemistry, Materials, Biology Science or Engineering with 5+ years of lab experience
  • 2-5 years prior experience in a combination of LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and/or GC-MS is required.
  • Familiarity with quality control or method validation is strongly preferred.

Salary range is $67,425.00-$87,000.00 + potential 5% annual bonus incentive + 401(k) + benefits.
