About the position

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking researchers with scientific and technical skills in a broad range of areas in astronomy or planetary science to fill several open positions. These positions are for scientist-track roles at any level of seniority, focusing on areas such as Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, High contrast imaging, and solar system science, with additional positions for general science support. Scientist-track researchers typically spend 80% of their time supporting science operations and 20% on independent research, with the possibility to increase research time up to 50% with grant support. STScI aims to expand the frontiers of space astronomy by serving the science community and public, fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity, and building foundations for future astronomy missions.

Responsibilities

  • Support strategic scientific areas, particularly ultraviolet spectroscopy.
  • Support and enhance the scientific return of Hubble and JWST through high-contrast imaging and coronagraphy.
  • Provide operational and developmental support for the Hubble, James Webb, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes, and the data archive (MAST).
  • Conduct independent research (20% of time, potentially up to 50% with grant support).
  • Perform science operations support, including detector characterization, instrument calibrations, data monitoring and trending, and user support.
