Description of Responsibilities
- Develop and submit proposals for research funding to extramural and intramural Department of Defense organizations to include but not limited to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), biotechnology companies, foundations, government, and research institutes. Additionally, working in collaboration with industry and academic partners under CRADAs
- Perform surgical procedures in animal trauma models to evaluate candidate blood products and potential therapies (blood and blood adjacent products, cellular therapies, etc.) in these models, while maintaining and complying with animal use directives applicable to USAISR (only applicable for certain roles)
- Design and conduct studies optimizing platelet storage conditions (cold storage, additive solutions, and collection methodologies) to extend shelf life while preserving efficacy as assessed by endothelial interactions, aggregation profiles, and biochemical, molecular, and metabolic characteristics (only applicable for certain roles)
- Provide laboratory research and lead a research team to satisfy mission support requirements
- Provide data analysis, publications, and presentations (lectures, seminars, and conferences)
- Collect and record experimental data, to include extensive use of computers and hemodynamic monitoring instruments, as well as create and implement new databases for new protocols
- Perform data entry and database maintenance and manipulation
- Maintain properly secured subject and sample documentation
- Perform appropriate statistical computations on raw data, and to be able to use software:
Excel, Word, PowerPoint, JMP, Sigma Plot/Stat, and Graph Pad Prism to organize and analyze data
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of trauma, critical care and hemorrhagic shock research, and transfusion medicine
- Support funding activities, review scientific documentation and literature, and establish and maintain collaborations as force multipliers to expand capabilities
- Perform scientific peer review for local protocols
- Provide consultation on relevant complex projects to DoD members as well as external collaborators
Degree/Education/Certification Requirements
Ph.D. (MD or DVM with a research concentration acceptable) in Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/Engineering (i.e. Biology, Biomedical, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering)
Required Skills and Experience
- Able to read, write, speak and understand English
- PHD (MD or DVM) in Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/Engineering (i.e. Biology, Biomedical, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering) with relevant Post Doctoral experience of 10+ years
- Ability to conduct independent research through publication of several technical reports and/or strong interpersonal skills to deal with the various personalities and personnel in a variety of positions, as well as the ability to cohesively lead a team comprised of research technicians/ (under) graduate students
- Ability to successfully perform the above responsibilities
Desired Skills and Experience
- Worked in a Principal Investigator (PI) or Program/Project Manager (PM) role
- Ability to persuade and negotiate as well as communicate information efficiently
- Experience with writing and/or obtaining grants/funding
- Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) experience/documentation
- Experience with hemorrhage, radiation models, dissection of veins and traumatic injury
- Experience with testing and administration drugs on animals
- Experience with in vitro testing of pharmaceuticals for FDA approval
- Experience developing high throughput cellular models for reclassifying current FDA approved drugs and therapeutics
- Capable of supporting multiple proposals in a functionalized matrix organization
- Experience creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the conduct of laboratory work
Required Citizenship and Clearance
- U.S. Citizenship is required
- Candidates must be able to pass a favorable adjudicated National Agency Check with Inquiries
