Senior Data Engineer

VIQU have partnered with a prominent organisation operating within a highly innovative and evolving sector. They are looking to recruit a Senior Data Engineer to play a key role in designing and building data-driven software that directly powers customer-facing products. This is a hands-on opportunity for an engineer who wants to move beyond traditional data pipelines and take ownership of scalable, production-grade data services within a modern engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities of the Senior Data Engineer:
- Design and build scalable, production-grade data services using Python
- Architect and develop event-driven and streaming data systems
- Build and manage data pipelines and services within an AWS-native environment
- Develop solutions using AWS services including S3 and Athena
- Design and implement messaging and event queue systems (e.g. Pulsar or similar)
- Build containerised applications using Docker within a microservices architecture
- Work closely with product and engineering teams to deliver customer-facing data solutions
- Take ownership of system design, performance and scalability decisions
- Contribute to infrastructure design using Terraform and modern DevOps practices
- Support and mentor other engineers within the team
Key Requirements of the Senior Data Engineer:
- 5+ years experience in data engineering or backend/software engineering roles
- Strong Python development skills, building clean, scalable, production-grade software
- Proven experience designing and building data systems and architecture from scratch
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS (essential), including services such as S3 and Athena
- Experience with event-driven or streaming architectures (e.g. Kafka, Pulsar or similar)
- Experience building or working with messaging/event queue systems
- Experience with containerisation tools such as Docker (Kubernetes beneficial)
- Experience working with infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform
- Strong understanding of ETL design, beyond low-code or heavily managed platforms
- Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Cassandra)
- Experience delivering solutions within a product-focused environment with end-user impact
