Core hours must be covered between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., with flexibility required between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to support a major transit engineering environment within Toronto. This role will contribute to the Electrical & Power Design function on high-impact infrastructure projects involving transit power, facilities, and related upgrades. The successful candidate will provide senior-level electrical engineering expertise across design, coordination, technical documentation, inspections, and stakeholder engagement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned engineer with deep experience in electrical distribution systems, control systems, design coordination, and construction/field environments, particularly within large public infrastructure, commercial, industrial, or transit-related settings.

Work Model

This role will be performed in a hybrid format, working primarily from the TTC office and from home, with regular in-person requirements and occasional site visits. Until December 2027, the primary office location will be 5140 Yonge Street, Toronto. Beginning January 2028, the in-person office location will move to 61 Front Street West, Toronto.

Candidates must be located in or accessible to the Greater Toronto Area, as site visits and in-person meetings will be required on occasion and may be scheduled with 24 hours’ notice. The successful consultant will be expected to attend TTC offices and/or sites 2 to 3 days per week.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for a broad range of electrical engineering, design, coordination, and technical leadership activities, including but not limited to:

  • Electrical Design and Power Systems
  • Design electrical systems for commercial and industrial applications, including power supply, distribution, and protection.
  • Design electrical distribution systems from 27.6 kV and 13.8 kV down to utilization voltages of 120/208 V and 347/600 V.
  • Select and specify electrical equipment such as:
  • transformers
  • high- and low-voltage switchgear
  • switchboards
  • motor control centres
  • panelboards
  • breakers
  • cabling
  • PLCs
  • motor starters
  • controls

Control Systems and Protection

  • Design control systems for equipment utilizing PLC technology.
  • Perform and review coordination studies for equipment protection, including relay and fuse coordination.

Life Safety and Building Systems

  • Design fire alarm systems.
  • Design normal and emergency lighting systems.

Technical Documentation

  • Prepare complete electrical designs, contract documents, and specifications.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, engineering studies, scope of work statements, workplans, preliminary reports, and pre-design reports.

Coordination and Project Delivery

  • Coordinate and collaborate with external design consultants.
  • Review design reports prepared by consultants and agencies.
  • Organize, schedule, and monitor work activities to meet project deadlines.
  • Attend and coordinate internal and external meetings with engineering disciplines and project stakeholders to define operational and end-user requirements.
  • Meet with suppliers, manufacturers, and municipal authorities, as required.

Site Reviews and Field Work

  • Review existing site conditions and prepare inspection reports identifying code violations and design recommendations.
  • Work effectively in both office and construction site environments.
  • Be comfortable working in challenging field conditions, including subway tunnels, ventilation shafts, and outdoor/construction settings under inclement weather conditions.

Communication and Problem Solving

  • Apply strong written and verbal communication skills in report writing, presentations, coordination, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Use analytical and problem-solving skills to make senior-level design recommendations and technical decisions.

Required Qualifications

  • To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • University degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience.
  • Current Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in the Province of Ontario is mandatory.
  • Working knowledge of CADD MicroStation or AutoCAD to review or modify drawings.
