Overview:
Mechanical Engineers are involved in the entire process, from sketching an idea through the manufacturing and testing of the finished product.
Duties:
- Start by creating a blueprint for a requested product, which involves brainstorming, creating rough drafts of the blueprint, and creating subsequent detailed designs. Once the designs are complete, the final blueprint is created and provided to the company or client for approval.
- Throughout development, the mechanical designer works with engineers to identify any areas of the design that need to be altered or improved. Sometimes this may result in a completely new design being developed.
- Once a product is created, mechanical designers work with quality assurance engineers to ensure that the product has no defects or abnormalities.
Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
- 7-10 years in precision mechanical design, preferably in HDD industry.
- Proven track record delivering products.
- Experience with high-volume consumer electronics or medical devices.
- CAD: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks.
- Analysis: FEA tools, modal analysis, shock/vibration simulation.
- Manufacturing: Deep knowledge of die casting, precision machining, MIM, stamping.
- Metrology: CMM programming, optical measurement systems, surface profilometry.
- Materials: Aluminum alloys, stainless steel, and engineering polymers for HDD applications.
- GD&T: Advanced application for tight-tolerance assemblies.
HDD-Specific Knowledge:
- Understanding of head-disk interface (HDI) and aerodynamics.
- Familiarity with contamination control and particle management.
- Knowledge of actuator dynamics and servo positioning systems.
- Awareness of magnetic recording fundamentals.
