Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Water & Wastewater

The Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take a leading role within a growing design team, delivering high–quality mechanical solutions across a range of water and wastewater treatment projects.
You will take technical ownership of mechanical design packages from concept through to completion, ensuring all systems meet regulatory, safety, and client requirements. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will deliver fully integrated solutions while supporting project delivery through design, procurement, installation, and commissioning stages.
This role also offers the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, influence best practice, and drive innovation and continuous improvement across projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of mechanical systems for water and wastewater treatment projects
Take ownership of designs from concept through to detailed design and delivery
Produce and review technical documentation, calculations, and specifications
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated design solutions
Conduct and support design reviews, risk assessments, and HAZOPs
Provide technical support during procurement, installation, and commissioning
Ensure compliance with industry standards, HSE requirements, and regulations
Mentor and support junior engineers within the team
Drive innovation, efficiency, and continuous improvement across projects
Experience Required
7–10 years' experience in mechanical design engineering
Ideally within the water or wastewater sector
Proven track record delivering mechanical designs on treatment or process–led projects
Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment such as pumps, pipework, valves, blowers, and filtration systems
Experience supporting commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimisation of systems
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities
Excellent problem–solving skills with a practical, solution–focused approach
Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining quality and accuracy
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
Collaborative approach, working effectively across multidisciplinary teams
Good understanding of mechanical design standards, HSE, and environmental regulations
Qualifications
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards
Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar
