We support the Department of Energy (DOE) in modernizing our power grid, enhancing renewable energy technologies, and addressing complex issues in energy management.

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EI&BD) is committed to accelerating the transition to a resilient and efficient energy system through innovative research and development. Our Power System Modeling Group (PSMG) plays a vital role by enhancing grid performance analysis and optimization.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic Power Systems Engineer who will take a leading role in advancing model enhancements for conventional power system models. You will help us adapt to the rapid changes in our nation’s energy landscape. Your contributions will include:

  • Offering expert insights within multidisciplinary teams, concentrating on power system optimization and capacity enhancement.
  • Conducting simulations and applying a strong understanding of grid operations and transmission planning.
  • Leading enhancement activities for models and designing simulations while evaluating technology performance.
  • Applying theoretical knowledge to develop and implement new tools, algorithms, and visualization systems.
  • Publishing your research findings in peer-reviewed journals and reports.
  • Building cohesive teams to ensure effective project execution and knowledge transfer.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with experienced staff to drive project success.
  • Traveling as needed to foster relationships and lead field projects.
  • Managing projects by guiding team members and ensuring milestones are achieved.
  • Promoting safe operating practices within the team.
  • Communicating effectively about engineering challenges and solutions to a diverse audience.
  • Collaborating closely with senior engineers to ensure quality project delivery.
  • Embracing challenges and effectively handling uncertainty.

On-site work in Richland, WA is preferred, but remote options may be considered.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience in power system modeling, or
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with large-scale power system optimization models.
  • Knowledge of power grid operations, transmission, resource planning, and economic factors.
  • Experience in developing applications and software for grid systems.
  • Familiarity with stochastic optimization and dynamic programming.
  • Proficiency in languages such as Python, GAMS, or Julia.
  • A track record of published research in reputable journals.
