Job Description

Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer — Motor Control & Satellite Test Systems, Satellite Engineering and Mechanical Development

Job | Amazon Kuiper Manufacturing Enterprises LLC

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded firmware (C/C++) to control electric motors (BLDC, stepper, servo) in satellite electromechanical systems.
  • Implement motor control algorithms including FOC, commutation, torque/speed regulation, and closed-loop position control.
  • Interface with sensors (encoders, Hall effect, current sensors, temperature, IMUs) to enable real-time feedback and monitoring.
  • Design and build automated test systems for verifying satellite hardware and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Develop cloud-based tools and infrastructure for test data collection, analysis, remote monitoring, and fleet-level reporting.
  • Communicate with higher-level system architectures via standard protocols (CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet).
  • Author functional requirements, design verification plans, and test procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate firmware into satellite hardware.
  • Support product releases from prototype through manufacturing and deployment.

A Day in the Life

This is not a generic embedded role. You will write the firmware that makes motors move, actuators deploy, and mechanisms operate — then build the cloud-connected test infrastructure to prove it all works. The ideal candidate lives at the intersection of embedded systems, motor control theory, and software architecture.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
  • 4+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, and scaling).
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team lead.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Python and/or C++ programming.
  • Experience in embedded development in C/C++, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle experience (coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations).
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.

Benefits

The base salary range for this position is $168,100 – $227,400 USD annually. Amazon offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription), life insurance options, EAP, mental health support, flexible spending accounts, adoption and surrogacy reimbursement, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.

Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
