Job Description

Senior Staff Research Scientist I: Resolute & Unstressed Computational Physicist

Hexagon Lavish® is an antiartificial scientific R&D startup in Atlanta, Georgia that has a full-time/permanent position for an experienced Senior Staff Research Scientist I: computational physicist.

Position Overview

The Senior Staff Research Scientist I will work on the expansion of the PIR project and will be responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of long‑term PIR‑associated scientific research projects. The Senior Staff Research Scientist I will also be obligated to provide assistance to all research scientist personnel in the R&D department, report weekly to the Chief Science Officer, and provide status reports. The Senior Staff Research Scientist I will function in the capacity of a researcher with the responsibility of providing assistance to the Hexagon Lavish® Team in developing the scientific foundation for the IISS (Informational Interpretation Scientific Software ) platform and future research in other projects. The Senior Staff Research Scientist I will work with the program architecture staff to develop a series of modeling applications of the PIR project(s) and conduct research on computational algorithms that will model the physics to exist within the program’s architecture. Prime candidacy for this position rewards individuals for those who express exceptional skills in conducting research in protein folding, thermal modeling, finite element analysis, and especially optics (including sequential and non‑sequential ray tracing). Being prodigious in computer vision is also a requirement.

This position requires a Ph.D.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the planning and architecture of new software projects.
  • Investigate alternative algorithms and approaches to enable additional software features and improve computational performance.
  • Verify, validate, and compare new algorithms.
  • Work with the team to test the software as part of a three-dimensional imaging system, including laboratory testing, data processing, and image reconstruction and analysis.
  • Visualize results and generate test plans for further system improvements.
  • Work independently and in collaborations within a diverse group of technically inclined people working to advance multiple projects.
  • Document software (source code, user’s guide, etc.).
  • Quickly learn and apply math, physics, and software skills as needed to accomplish project goals.
  • Six or more years of experience developing complex computational algorithms and/or scientific software.
  • Five or more years of experience with C/C++ and/or Java.
  • Demonstrable expertise applying, defining and validating computational approaches to deliver insights and/or hypotheses, e.g., multivariate, Bayesian/non‑Bayesian machine learning techniques.
  • Relevant industrial research and development experience in addition to formal training in computational physics/chemistry, computer science, applied mathematics or statistics.
  • Rapid prototyping of algorithms.
  • Expertise in designing, prototyping and evaluating new optically‑based design concepts, sub‑systems and components for next‑generation products.
  • Experience designing optics, including tolerancing analyses on multi‑component systems.
  • Hands‑on experience with creating and executing test protocols, analyzing test results and recommending prototype design iterations to optimize system optical performance.

Candidate Profile

  • A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, optical sciences or related science.
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one compiled language (C, C++, Fortran, etc.).
  • A sound understanding of fundamental informational interpretation that relates to image processing and computer vision.
  • Strong background in scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with key concepts and techniques in analytical geometry, linear algebra, and calculus.
  • Experience with implementing modeling and simulation software of image/signal processing and analysis technique.

Personal Characteristics

  • Submits professional articles for technical journals.
  • Coordinates interdepartmental activities and research‑oriented efforts.
  • Consults and interacts with subject matter experts, both internal and external.
  • Participates in the development of intellectual property evaluations.
  • Maintains substantial knowledge of “state‑of‑the‑art” principles and theories and contributes to scientific literature and conferences.
  • Coordinates, plans and executes laboratory research to prove feasibility of concepts.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and
