About the role

Original posting from Mapbox via Ashby

Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform for a new generation of location-aware businesses. Mapbox is the only platform that equips organizations with the full set of tools to power the navigation of people, packages, and vehicles everywhere. More than 4 million registered developers have chosen Mapbox because of the platform’s flexibility, security and privacy compliance. Organizations use Mapbox applications, data, SDKs and APIs to create customized and immersive experiences that delight their customers.

WHAT WE DO

The EV Platform team powers the charging infrastructure data layer behind Mapbox's electric vehicle products. Our services aggregate and process real-time and static EV charging station data from charge point operators around the world, making it reliable, accurate, and fresh for the automotive and mobility customers who depend on it in production.

We build and operate the data ingestion pipelines, quality assurance systems, and APIs that sit between the global CPO ecosystem and the navigation experiences our customers ship to end users. The team owns the full data lifecycle, from integrating new data sources to ensuring the operational health of the systems delivering that data at scale. The data we produce flows downstream into many other Mapbox products and teams, including search, map data, and routing, making this a high-visibility team with broad impact across the company.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the EV Platform team you will be working on the data infrastructure that powers Mapbox's global EV charging station coverage. This includes the ingestion pipeline that processes data from a global network of charge point operators and data aggregators, the quality systems that keep that data accurate, and the APIs that serve it to customers and internal teams.

Projects you might take part in:

  • Expanding global EV charging coverage by integrating with new charge point operators across new regions
  • Building systems that reconcile and unify charging station data across multiple providers into a single authoritative dataset
  • Building and scaling the data ingestion pipeline for higher reliability and throughput
  • Designing data validation and quality systems to ensure accuracy of charging station attributes and live availability
  • Developing internal tooling and dashboards to monitor data health and surface corrections
  • Supporting downstream Mapbox teams consuming EV charging data in their products

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Design and implement scalable data pipelines and backend services, following best practices for deployment, resilience, and observability
  • Run and design experiments to evaluate the quality, accuracy, and coverage of EV charging data
  • Participate in end-to-end feature implementation within the larger Mapbox ecosystem; review code and design documents, shepherd feature releases, and participate in an on-call rotation
  • Work with product owners, partner teams, and management to drive future data platform direction

WHAT WE BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT TRAITS FOR THIS ROLE

  • Strong proficiency in Rust (3+ years) for production backend services.
  • Experience building highly available backend services and data pipelines in container-based environments on AWS, including Docker, ECS, Fargate, or Kubernetes, with hands-on experience in service monitoring, incident triage, and continuous product improvement. Familiarity with Argo and Datadog is a plus.
  • Knowledge of data engineering concepts, including pipeline design, data quality validation, and large-scale data processing.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems (fault-tolerance, consistency, service discovery). System architecture experience and understanding of architectural concepts. Ability to improve services based on data analysis and performance profiling.
  • Being an excellent team player with the ability to work within a collaborative environment.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and knowledge sharing, supported by strong communication skills in English.
  • Passion about programming and a strong focus on quality. Implementation of automated tests.

As AI becomes embedded in modern engineering workflows, we value engineers who can thoughtfully integrate AI into design, development, and decision-making. Our interview process will include discussion of how you use AI in your engineering workflow.
