Role Overview – Precision Optics / Diamond Turning Engineer

The Precision Optics / Diamond Turning Engineer is responsible for supporting high-volume manufacturing of precision optical components, with a focus on single-point diamond turning and ultra-precision machining processes.

This role plays a key part in process optimization, quality control, and continuous improvement, ensuring high-yield, repeatable production of optical components while meeting stringent performance and quality requirements.

The position combines hands-on engineering, process control, and cross-functional collaboration to support operational excellence and manufacturing scalability.

What You’ll Need

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline); relevant experience will also be considered
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a technical, engineering, or manufacturing environment
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing, preferably in optics
  • Candidates with 4+ years of experience may be considered for a Senior role
  • Hands-on experience in:
  • Single-point diamond turning (SPDT) of optics or precision components (preferred)
  • Familiarity with:
  • Process control systems and quality assurance methodologies
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and/or AS9100 environments
  • Practical knowledge of:
  • Root cause analysis (RCA), 8D problem-solving, and Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Strong understanding of materials science, including:
  • Optical materials (e.g., ZnS, ZnSe, Ge, Si)
  • Tool wear mechanisms and surface integrity
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to work shifts as required

What You’ll Do

  • Support and optimize diamond turning and ultra-precision machining processes for optical components
  • Monitor and control manufacturing processes to ensure product quality, yield, and repeatability
  • Implement and maintain process control systems and quality assurance procedures
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on process deviations and lead corrective actions
  • Design and execute DOE (Design of Experiments) to improve process performance and reduce variability
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to resolve technical issues
  • Analyze tool wear, surface finish, and material behavior to enhance machining performance
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean and Six Sigma principles
  • Train production technicians and operators on best practices and process standards
  • Ensure compliance with ISO and quality management system requirements
  • Contribute to process documentation, work instructions, and standard operating procedures
  • Support scaling of processes for high-volume production environments

What We’re Looking For

  • A hands-on manufacturing engineer with strong interest in precision optics and ultra-precision machining
  • Experience or strong interest in diamond turning and optical fabrication processes
  • Detail-oriented with strong focus on quality, precision, and process stability
