Software Development Engineer III, Telemetry

WHAT WE DO

It is an exciting time to join Mapbox as we build a brand-new Telemetry team from the ground up to power the next generation of navigation, maps, and search products at a global scale. This newly formed team will design, develop, and operate mission-critical services and high-throughput streaming data pipelines that process petabytes of device information and geospatial data. These systems will provide company-wide observability, performance metrics, and actionable insights that directly inform how we can improve all our foundational Mapbox products such as Navigation SDK https://www.mapbox.com/navigation-automotive, Maps SDK https://www.mapbox.com/mobile-maps-sdk, and data products such as Traffic https://www.mapbox.com/traffic-data, Movement https://www.mapbox.com/movement-data, Boundaries https://www.mapbox.com/boundaries, and Roads https://www.mapbox.com/autopilot-map. This Telemetry team will sit at the core of Mapbox’s strategic initiatives across consumer, automotive, and logistics use cases, directly shaping how millions of people and businesses move through the world.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

We are seeking a highly innovative and driven Software Development Engineer III who will partner with Engineering Leaders across the company to develop and execute the vision of our new Telemetry team. This team and initiative will have company-wide scope and impact requiring strong collaboration, communication, and execution skills.

In this role, you can expect to:

• Collaborate with your team to identify and scope out well-defined tasks.

• Execute on the scope and be accountable for delivering on time with quality.

• Design systems and make decisions that will keep pace with the rapid growth of Mapbox’s customer base.

• Promote a culture of operational excellence by meticulously testing and monitoring our systems and code, writing documentation, and being on-call to support the health of our services.

• Reduce technical debt, share your knowledge, and invest in your teammates’ health and happiness, while optimizing application performance and accelerating feature velocity.

• Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions.

WHAT WE BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT TRAITS FOR THIS ROLE

• 8+ years of experience building scalable high volume low latency backend services

• 3+ years of experience building pipelines (streaming) capable of handling petabytes worth of data

• Eagerness to learn and become proficient with many different test stacks and languages – Python, NodeJS, TypeScript, Rust, C++, and AWS (CDK, ECS, Fargate, Step Functions, Lambda, S3, etc.)

• Knowledge and experience handling global data security standards

• Familiarity with code versioning tools, such as GitHub

• Ability to engage, learn and contribute quickly to the initiatives

• Able to perform independently all the development tasks, based on designs and specs.

• Self-starter who is communication and outcomes-oriented

• An empirical analytical approach. You develop strong hypotheses, conduct spikes, and clearly communicate your findings

• A desire to share your expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing and both written and verbal discussion

• A desire to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences

• High quality mindset -- write unit tests, proactively remedy defects and follow through to production
