The role / impact

As a Senior Applied Scientist, you will research and implement Generative AI solutions that simplify the Xero customer experience. You will have a direct impact on how customers interact with our platform by shaping intuitive, AI-powered SaaS experiences that make complex workflows feel seamless.

Your work involves using cutting-edge LLM APIs to evaluate reasoning, accuracy, and limitations across the full accounting domain. By combining Generative AI with classical machine learning methods, you will deliver tangible outcomes that help small businesses and their advisors thrive.

The team / how they connect

You will join XAIN AI North America, a dedicated R&D group focused on building innovative AI products. This is a highly collaborative team that connects daily via Slack and Google Meet, working closely with internal product and engineering partners across the globe.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

• Researching and implementing Generative AI solutions using the latest LLM APIs.
• Developing hybrid machine learning approaches that merge Generative AI with classical techniques for better accuracy.
• Designing and deploying scalable machine learning systems to solve real-world product problems.
• Building data pipelines and wrangling complex datasets to support AI-driven features.

Where and how you can work

This is a fully remote team across North America, with a primary focus on the West Coast to ensure effective collaboration. While you have the freedom to work from home, you will remain closely connected with colleagues in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

• You bring a solid foundation in machine learning theory, including probability, linear algebra, and calculus.
• Your background includes applying machine learning techniques like NLP or computer vision to practical product challenges.
• You possess strong software engineering fundamentals and write maintainable, testable code in Python or Scala.
• You have a knack for translating complex business problems into clear machine learning formulations.
• You enjoy collaborating across functions and can explain technical concepts to teammates with different backgrounds.
• You thrive in ambiguous environments, helping to turn loosely defined ideas into actionable research directions.
