A DAY IN THE LIFE:
A Sr. Data Scientist at Tandem uses machine learning and data science to improve Tandem’s ability to simulate physiology, design algorithms to manage diabetes, and assist with product-related decisions. This team member will use Tandem’s data assets to solve data-driven problems, improve operational efficiency through forecasting and automation, identify and prioritize opportunities to improve overall user experience, and improve business outcomes.
A Sr. Data Scientist at Tandem also:
•
Participates in creating future closed-loop algorithms using complex data modeling.
•
Performs analysis of algorithms to satisfy requests from the FDA.
•
Identifies meaningful insights from large data sources; interprets and communicates insights and findings from analyses and experiments to product, service, and business stakeholders.
•
Uses data to provide unique insights and differentiated experiences for Tandem’s customers.
•
Supports the team in the development and/or implementation of data products or models.
•
Provides mentoring, training, and guidance to team members with less experience in data science, diabetes technology, and custom tools designed and used by the Algorithms and Insights Group.
•
Provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise in data science, including statistics, modeling, machine learning, and AI.
•
Collaborates and coordinates efforts with Tandem’s academic partners.
•
Attends industry and academic conferences to keep up to date with the state of technology.
WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:
Hybrid: This role will be a mix of in-office work at our corporate headquarters in Del Mar, CA and remote work. This position is expected to be in office 3 days per week but may vary depending on business demands.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
•
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, or other quantitative discipline or related field or equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience.
•
Graduate education in a relevant field is preferred.
•
5 years of related experience in data science.
•
Ability to travel up to 10%, including international travel.
•
Advanced knowledge of data science techniques: distribution fitting, multivariate statistics, stochastic modeling, time series modeling, design of experiments, Monte Carlo methods, robust statistics, sampling, segmentation, clustering, hypothesis testing, regression, forecasting, machine learning.
•
Experience deploying machine learning models using cloud platforms.
•
Programming skills in Python, or similar programming languages.
•
Skilled with data visualization: quickly and effectively “tell the data story;” draw from a large portfolio of visualization techniques to bring salient points forward to stakeholders for whom statistics may not be a core competency.

Ability to deliver actionable results in a collaborative environment.
•
Excellent pragmatic and data-driven problem-solving skills.
•
Strong attention to detail.
•
Demonstrated ability to learn and grow new skills.
•
Ability to think strategically and apply data science to develop offerings that provide unique differentiation.
•
Familiarity with big data technology (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), software engineering experience, and diabetes knowledge are a plus.
•
Ability to diagnose problems and identify and implement appropriate solutions.
•
Capable of managing multiple priorities effectively, estimating project timelines and identifying and recommending the best course of action from several alternatives.
•
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and flexibility to function in a fast-paced and innovative environment.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The starting base pay range for this position is $135,000 to $160,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market.
