Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. was created 30 years ago in Cincinnati, Ohio, developing innovative devices that have driven the shift from open to minimally invasive surgery that continues to lead the industry today. Our diverse team of engineers, designers, and technical specialists are on the forefront of technology in the medical device industry.

The Staff Electrical Design Engineer will make vital contributions to the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline and transform patient care through innovation. They are responsible for working with our NPD teams to design, and develop electrical systems for use in cutting edge medical devices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the design, manufacturing, and lifecycle of a Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) that is critical to the functionality of the capital device.
  • Document designs, specifications, and requirements per design control processes.
  • Drive the design, development, and debugging of embedded product software to integrate with mechanical, electrical, and distributed computing systems.
  • Lead root cause investigations on electrical and software related issues that arise during the prototype and production processes.
  • Own the hardware verification strategy with Manufacturing and Test Engineers to implement automated testing of the capital equipment.
  • Lead the External Standards testing efforts for the capital equipment.
  • Mentor junior members of the engineering staff to expand design team capabilities and establish good working practices.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

  • A results and performance driven approach with strong sense of accountability.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree.
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant work experience in a direct electrical engineering role.
  • PCBA design, manufacturing, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with embedded electrical design.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Cadence and/or Altium to design, simulate, and analyze circuit designs.
  • Detailed understanding of board-level printed circuit design and signal integrity issues.
  • Demonstrated ability working across subject areas with internal and external partners.
  • Strong collaboration, proven technical leadership capabilities, and conflict resolution skills.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

  • Design control experience.
  • Experience debugging embedded hardware systems.
  • FPGA design and test experience (SystemVerilog or VHDL)
  • Experience with various communication protocols (e.g. Bluetooth, SPI, I2C, USB, UART, USART, etc.).
  • Experience with Distributed Data Services (DDS), e.g. (RTI Connext, OpenDDS, MQTT, or similar distributed data sharing libraries).
  • Experience with IEC 60601-1, 60601-1-2, IEC 60601-2-2, IEC 62304, etc. and relevant standards within Medical Devices, or equivalent standards in other industries.
  • Experience with CANOpen communication protocol.
  • Experience working with different Operating Systems, particularly QNX and Linux.
