About the position

Kennedy Jenks is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer in the Irvine, California area. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with 1–4 years of experience who is interested in developing technical skills in instrumentation and controls for municipal pump stations and water and wastewater facilities. You will be part of a collaborative, multi-discipline team providing engineering and environmental solutions to clients in the water environment and industrial sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of instrumentation and control systems as part of multi-discipline project teams
  • Assist with the development of process control system designs, including instrumentation layouts and control narratives
  • Support the preparation of Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and control strategies
  • Assist with network system architecture and design, feasibility studies, and cost estimates
  • Follow established design standards and procedures to create design documents including project drawings and specifications
  • Conduct field visits and provide field support during construction and startup, with mentorship
  • Coordinate with project managers, electrical engineers, and designers to support project delivery
  • Communicate with clients and internal teams with guidance from senior staff

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 1–4 years of experience in instrumentation and controls, electrical engineering, or control systems (consulting experience preferred but not required)
  • Exposure to water, wastewater, pump stations, or industrial process facilities is a plus
  • Familiarity with some of the following is preferred: Instrumentation systems and specifications, P&IDs and basic control strategies, PLC and/or SCADA systems (coursework, internships, or early professional experience acceptable), AutoCAD (2D), Revit (3D), Microsoft Office Suite
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain
  • Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the future
