Job Description

Who We Are

Stormentum is accelerating energy independence by helping solar installers provide storage-first systems that homeowners can actually afford. Our modular, battery-agnostic inverter platform cuts hardware costs by 50% and reduces total system costs by up to 30%, giving installers full control over design, supply chain, and margins.

Our founding team has spent decades at the frontier of residential solar and storage — designing the hardware, building the software, and scaling the teams that brought clean energy into millions of homes. We're building Stormentum to solve the hardest problem in the space: making storage-first systems affordable enough for every homeowner, not just early adopters.

About the Role

At Stormentum you’ll join the systems architecture, modeling, and controls group as a controls engineer advancing the development of novel algorithms for modular multilevel converters. Projects don’t end with control system analysis; you’ll be an integral team member supporting the development and tuning of digital controls, guide the selection of hardware for compute , communications, and sensors, and model system-level performance and fault metrics that shape the customer experience.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop component and system-level controls and fault-behavior requirements and collaborate with the hardware and firmware teams on microcontroller and sensor selection, hardware filter design, and the communication architecture
  • Support the firmware team with implementing digital controls and developing tools for debugging control algorithms
  • Model and simulate the impact hardware changes will have on component and system-level controls
  • Develop and test the efficacy and system-level impact of different switching techniques
  • Model control algorithms in the analog and digital domain and support the development of dynamic physics models for power electronics hardware, solar cells, energy storage systems, and grid loads
  • Support additional algorithm development to meet safety, compliance, reliability, and customer-facing performance requirements
  • Support the firmware and hardware teams by developing controls for component and system-level device test apparatuses

What We're Looking For

  • An MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or similar field (specialization in power electronics a plus)
  • 5+ years of experience developing and implementing power electronics control systems, ideally across 2 full cycles of projects bringing two distinct products to market
  • Both a strong theoretical and practical understanding of the digital implementation of power electronics control systems using classical controls derivation techniques to understand the stability, observability, and controllability in the analog and digital domains
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and testing control algorithms at the component and system level for switching power converters using both simulation and hardware platforms
  • Experience modeling power electronics hardware and control systems in Matlab/Simulink or PLECS simulation development environments and real-time simulation platforms (like Opal-RT, Typhoon HIL)
  • Experience developing and implementing control algorithms in compliance with processes outlined in UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, UL 1741 PCS, UL 1998, and IEC 61508
  • Experience programming control and safety algorithms in C/C++ and Python

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • Familiarity with decentralized controls for interconnected systems a plus
  • Familiarity with Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) a plus
  • Familiarity with international grid standards including CSA C22.2 No.107.1, IEC 62109-1/-2, and EN 50549 a plus

Compensation and Benefits

The base pay range for this role is $125,000 - $175,000 annually. The successful candidate’s base pay will be determined based on several factors, including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, and organizational needs. This position is also eligible for equity awards and benefits.

We offer comprehensive benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, 401(k), flexible time off, and paid holidays.

Equal Opportunity Employer
