Position: Substation Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer

Senior Protection & Controls Engineer – Energy & Power Solutions
Jacobs is expanding its Transmission & Distribution (T&D) operations in North America and is looking for a Senior Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer to tackle the complexities of decarbonization and utility modernization. The successful candidate will work closely with regional and global T&D delivery teams to support utility/developer clients and operations teams as we expand our energy transition portfolio.
Base Pay Range: $/yr – $/yr (actual pay based on skills and experience)
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with regional and global T&D teams to interface with utility/developer clients on P&C methodologies and develop design deliverables for utility upgrades, including greenfield/brownfield & GIS substations, offshore wind facilities, and developer interconnection facilities.
- Understand client standards and protection philosophies, provide feedback on applications, and independently develop P&C deliverables on time and within budget.
- Mentor and develop team members across North America and globally through the Jacobs Global Integrated Delivery (GID) network.
- Participate in the sales and proposal preparation process for new contracts and support the high‑quality delivery of services to clients.
- Engage with professional societies such as IEEE and PES; attend industry conferences, seminars, trade shows, and networking events to promote company services and stay updated on industry innovations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or related discipline (Master’s degree counts as 1 year of professional experience).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States and ability to obtain additional PE licenses if needed.
- At least 10 years of direct protection and controls design experience with a utility or consulting organization.
- Advanced knowledge of protection philosophies and relaying functions for high‑voltage substations (line protection, transformer protection, breaker failure, cap bank protection, communication‑based schemes, differential protection, etc.).
- Experience developing substation protection and control designs, including drawings of panel arrangements/layouts, one‑line/single‑line, three‑line, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
- Knowledge of DNP3 & IEC 61850 designs; ability to develop protection and controls deliverables, including logic diagrams.
- Ability to design SCADA communications, perform substation AC/DC station service calculations, voltage‑drop calculations, and fiber‑cable sizing and selection.
- Experience reviewing vendor specifications for control house/switch gear buildings.
- Demonstrated QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications for protection and controls designs.
- Familiarity with Relay Settings acSELerator Quick Set Software and CADD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products.
- Ability to conduct field visits and walk‑downs as required for client projects and to provide engineering support through construction.
- Strong communication, technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
