The Role

The Supplier Quality Engineer, Electrical is a key liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and our global supply base, ensuring robust launch execution and ongoing quality performance of supplier-provided components. You will lead Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), execute the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and Run at Rate (R@R), and drive systemic problem solving with suppliers to deliver flawless parts to our manufacturing plants and customers.

Travel is required (approximately 40–50% domestic) to visit supplier manufacturing locations and GM facilities.

What You'll Do

  • Lead APQP with assigned suppliers to meet or exceed program timing and quality targets, ensuring manufacturing readiness at key milestones.
  • Review and approve supplier quality deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEAs, Control Plans, MSA, and capability studies, ensuring alignment to GM standards and customer requirements.
  • Execute and approve PPAP and Run@Rate submissions, confirming process capacity, stability, and robust control of key characteristics prior to production release.
  • Monitor supplier performance using key quality metrics (PPM, PRR/SPPS, warranty, launch issues) and drive continuous improvement through structured action plans and workshops.
  • Lead structured problem solving (e.g., Red X, 7 Diamonds, 8D/SPPS) for supplier-related issues, from fast containment through root cause analysis and robust long-term corrective actions.
  • Conduct on-site supplier assessments and process reviews to verify manufacturing process capability, quality system effectiveness, and compliance with IATF 16949 and GM requirements
  • Partner cross-functionally with Design Release Engineering, Manufacturing, Plant Quality, Purchasing, and Launch teams to ensure alignment on design changes, risk mitigation, and launch readiness.
  • Develop and share lessons learned across programs and commodities to prevent recurrence of systemic issues and strengthen standard work for supplier quality.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Materials, or related) or an equivalent technical degree (e.g., Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) or relevant experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in supplier quality, quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, or product engineering, preferably in the automotive or closely related industry.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with APQP: PPAP, Run@Rate, control plans, PFMEA, MSA, and SPC.
  • Proficient in print reading, GD&T, gage design and selection, part measurement, and application of dimensional data for decision making.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes, tooling, automation, and process controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to use probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments for problem solving and process optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, influence without direct authority, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, and leadership at multiple levels.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to summarize complex technical issues into clear, action-oriented updates for both technical and non-technical audiences

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • Automotive supplier quality experience with direct responsibility for APQP/PPAP on complex components (e.g., electrical/electronic modules, PCBAs).
  • Formal training or certification in Red X, Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt), or equivalent structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience with IATF 16949, and customer-specific requirements, including GM procedures such as GM 1927 Global Supplier Quality Manual and related standards.
  • Previous experience leading suppliers through significant launch, ramp-up, or recovery situations, including containment, 3rd-party inspection management, and escalation processes.
  • Demonstrated success coaching suppliers to build robust quality systems, improve process capability, and institutionalize layered process audits and error-proofing.
  • Strong data analytics skills (e.g., Excel, statistical tools, visualization) to identify patterns, prioritize issues, and monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Experience working in global, multi-cultural environments, with the ability to adapt communication and leadership style across regions and cultures.
