Job Description
Join one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a System Manger, Risk Management for our Risk and Patient Safety department. This is an on-site position with opportunities for remote work. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
This position will have oversight of the Risk Management and Patient Family Insights (PFI) programs for the UCM Health system in setting goals and priorities under the Patient Safety Plan, under the direction of the Director. The Manager will oversee the selection and training of the Risk Managers and Patient Family Insight team. The Manager of Risk Management will work with the Office of Legal Affairs to maintain compliance with the Malpractice Trust Program, including the maintenance of a robust event reporting system with PSO submission, disclosure program, and reserve process for adverse events.
Essential Job Functions
- Program/Portfolio Management
- Assist the Director and VP in setting and implementing organizational goals focused on safe care and malpractice reduction. As part of this process, conducts an annual assessment of the Safety and Risk Management programs to set priorities and focus new initiatives.
- Assists the Director in the annual review and revision of system policies, protocols, etc.
- Provides leadership support to the risk management and patient family insights team and helps facilitate root cause analysis meetings for all sentinel events and high-risk systems issues identified by staff.
- Oversee the facilitation of follow-up task force and committee meetings to address risk and safety issues identified.
- Links specific initiatives to reductions in claims frequency and severity trends to reduce malpractice-related expenditures.
- Oversees the risk management team completion of complaints, grievances, and safety investigations through clinician interviews, medical record assessment, and environment of care analysis for assigned patient care events categorized as near miss, adverse, or sentinel events as well as the integration of new facilities and practices into the system.
- Tracks and trends event reporting/safety data and patient feedback data and prepares reports and metrics for presentation at regularly scheduled meetings and/or regular internal distribution.
- Partners with Director to ensure collaboration with the patient safety team on identified safety trends and opportunities.
- Oversight in the selection, onboarding and mentoring of risk management and patient family insights staff.
- Provides support and consultation services to all risk management and patient family insights staff on a rotating schedule for pager coverage 24/7.
- Facilitate disclosure conversations with clinicians and patient/family members.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field, preferably nursing
- Hospital experience of at least 5-7 years in a clinical or administrative role with specific experience in dealing with patient safety, risk management and/or quality
- Risk Management work experience of at least 5 years
- Working knowledge of Joint Commission standards
- Expectation of maintenance of current licensure(s)
- Excellent oral and interpersonal written communication skills, poise in teaching, and consulting
- Strong organizing and data management skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics to design and implement monitoring and evaluation tools
- Proven capability to juggle multiple priorities, delegate, and ensure timely follow through with implementation
- Open and collaborative leadership style that promotes partnerships and builds trust with all constituents
- Energy, diplomacy, and strong skills in analysis, change management, and communications
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in healthcare, business, or legal
- Experience in supervising, leadership and management functions
