Job Description

Job Title: Systems Test Engineer

Location: Greenford (Hybrid – 3 days in the office)

Reports to: Systems Engineering Lead

About The Company

Our purpose is to change the way people live in cities. By providing the means to commute or explore with a bike that you can take anywhere and store anywhere, we can make cities better places to live. We want to increase people’s freedom, improve their health and reduce society’s impact on the environment. We make more than just a bicycle, and we are more than just a bicycle company.

We continue to make the Brompton in West London, where we started in 1975, but our product has travelled far - we now export 80% of our bicycles to 47 countries. In the past 3 years we have invested in a new purpose-built production facility, transformed our digital architecture, opened new flagship stores and had our biggest product launch in company history and we’re not stopping there…

To truly deliver on our purpose, we need passionate, innovative and talented people that want to challenge the status quo and make an impact. We can offer you a job you won’t find anywhere else.

The Role

We are seeking a hands-on Systems Integration Engineer to join our team and ensure the reliability and excellence of our future electric drive systems. In this role, you will run comprehensive Verification and Validation (V&V) activities across our integrated software and hardware platforms. You will be responsible for testing electric drive system prototypes to support the integration of the electrical drive system on current and future Brompton product lines.

Your work will span from validating the safety and compliance of software releases to verifying outsourced hardware components like batteries. This role combines rigorous systems thinking with a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will not only execute tests but also define the future of our validation landscape by developing new test methods, identifying innovative solutions to engineering problems, and maintaining the specialized equipment and jigs essential for our success. You will have a direct impact on the safety, performance, and "ride feel" of our products as they reach the hands of thousands of riders.

About You

The successful candidate won't hesitate to get hands-on in the lab to test any part of an electric-assisted bicycle. You should have an eye for detail when defining V&V best practices yet remain adaptable when troubleshooting in a fast-paced development environment. Clear communication and a collaborative mindset are essential as you translate test results into actionable insights with the wider development team, made-up of system, software, and electronic engineers, ensuring components are fit for purpose on the final product.

We’re looking for someone who approaches validation with systems thinking. You are comfortable taking ownership of the test environment and passionate about driving continuous process improvements to elevate our validation standards.

What The Job Involves

  • Validate outsourced components, (e.g. battery systems, HMI’s and sensors) for performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
  • Identify integration issues and bugs, performing route cause analysis and propose fixes or mitigations in a timely manner.
  • Plan, develop and document new test methods, test scripts and procedures.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance and risk assessment of test jigs and equipment, and identifying additional hardware required to expand our testing capabilities.
  • Support failure mode and effect analysis analyses, ensuring all suitable validation activities are addressed as mitigations.
  • Drive the definition of V&V best practices and continuous improvements.

Who You Are

  • Experience in a systems V&V of electro-mechanical products within consumer electronics or medium-scale systems in regulated industries (e.g., automotive, aerospace, or medical devices).
  • Experience in using testing to guide investigations of electro-mechanical systems and a comfort level working with physical test rigs and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to understand complex interactions between software, electronics, and mechanical subsystems.
  • Analytical and a problem solver.
  • Comfortable communicating test results, risks and status and ability to collaborate efficiently with different teams and stakeholders.
  • Engineering Technician or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline, or a related technical field.
  • Knowledge of validation tools, CAD and experience with automated testing scripts and knowledge of Python is desirable.
  • Experience and knowledge on relevant technologies including battery, sensors and actuator technologies is desirable.
  • Experience and proficiency using Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tools for test automation and reporting is desirable.
