Data Engineering Lead – GCP & Teradata start
works 3 days per week in our office in Atlanta.
Role Summary
This is a hands‑on, customer‑facing Data Engineering Lead role responsible for running, operating, and modernizing a hybrid Teradata and GCP data platform in a highly complex enterprise environment. The position serves as the face of the organization for a specific business domain within the A&I group and owns production stability, SLAs, incident response, and delivery of new GCP‑based pipelines.
This is not a people manager role in the traditional sense, but every position is a lead role with full ownership, accountability, and direct interaction with senior stakeholders and clients. The environment includes legacy Teradata platforms with limited remaining in‑house knowledge, offshore dependencies, and an active Teradata‑to‑GCP migration, requiring strong judgment, independence, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Production Ownership (Run and Operate)
Serve as the single accountable lead for production operations across Teradata and GCP for an assigned business domain.
Own incident management, emergency response, SLA adherence, and advance change notifications.
Take full end‑to‑end ownership of issues, including triage, root cause analysis, resolution, communication, and post‑incident follow‑ups.
Run and operate Teradata platforms, including shell scripting, batch orchestration, job scheduling, monitoring, and recovery.
Actively manage and update Jira tickets, ensuring accurate status, documentation, and stakeholder communication.
Teradata & Legacy Platform Expertise
Provide deep Teradata architectural expertise, including data warehouse design, SQL performance tuning, workload management, and capacity planning.
Maintain and stabilize legacy Teradata systems where institutional knowledge has been reduced due to layoffs and transitions.
Troubleshoot complex production issues independently when escalation paths or in‑house expertise are limited.
Ensure business continuity while balancing legacy operational demands with modernization goals.
GCP Data Engineering & Modernization
Design and build new, cloud‑native data pipelines on GCP, accounting for approximately 50% of the role’s workload.
Support and resolve production issues on GCP, including data ingestion, transformation, and downstream consumption.
Lead operational aspects of the Teradata‑to‑GCP migration, ensuring stability during coexistence of old and new platforms.
Drive scalable, secure, and reliable solutions using GCP services aligned with enterprise standards.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the primary client‑facing lead, representing the organization in operational reviews, incident discussions, and delivery updates.
Partner closely with business, analytics, and upstream/downstream technology teams to align priorities and expectations.
Communicate clearly and confidently with senior stakeholders during critical incidents and high‑visibility situations.
Translate ambiguous or evolving business needs into actionable operational and engineering solutions.
Leadership & Accountability
Function as a domain lead supporting a specific director and organizational area.
Set technical direction, operational standards, and best practices within the assigned scope.
Lead by example through hands‑on execution, ownership mentality, and strong operational discipline.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of experience in data engineering or data platform operations.
Strong, hands‑on experience running Teradata in production environments, including shell scripting and operational troubleshooting.
Solid working knowledge of GCP data services and cloud‑based data engineering patterns.
Proven experience handling production incidents, SLAs, and mission‑critical systems.
Comfortable working in high‑stress, customer‑facing environments with limited support availability.
Strong communication skills with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting hybrid Teradata + GCP environments during cloud migration.
Background in enterprise analytics or A&I (Analytics & Insights) organizations.
Familiarity with ITSM tools (e.g., Jira) and structured incident management processes.
Experience operating in environments with legacy systems and limited documentation.
