Mandate:
The Portfolio Manager will support Global Markets Corporate Banking (“GCMB”) business in executing the first line of defense accountability for strong risk culture across the Asia-Pacific trading products franchise. The role provides robust multidimensional portfolio analysis and acts as the senior credit-led portfolio management voice for a defined book of Asia financial institutions with a primary focus on banks (Knowledge of underwriting for asset managers and insurance companies is highly desirable) spanning Japan, Korea, Greater China, ASEAN, India, and Australia/New Zealand together with Asia-Pacific Supranationals, Sovereigns and Agencies.
Portfolio coverage is anchored in trading products including OTC derivatives (rates, FX, cross-currency, credit, equity), repo and securities financing (GMRA, GMSLA), precious metals, and structured note programs. The role combines credit recommendation authority with portfolio-level oversight: assessing and recommending counterparty credit limits, negotiating ISDA/CSA and related trading documentation, analyzing PFE and wrong-way risk at the name level, and managing the book's risk-return profile, concentration, and capital efficiency at the portfolio level. The Portfolio Manager provides credit expertise to the Global Markets desk, oversees ongoing credit monitoring, and facilitates credit approvals across Global Markets and FI coverage teams.
Accountabilities:
- Contributes to growing and elevating the BMO brand within the Asia-Pacific financial institutions and SSA community through market presence, counterparty engagement, and credit thought leadership.
- Operates as a senior member of the Global Markets and FI portfolio management team, managing credit risk and returns on a defined book of Asia trading products counterparties.
- Owns the risk-return profile of the Asia trading products book, monitors concentration, capital consumption, RAROC, and collateral efficiency at the portfolio level, and recommends rebalancing, tiering, or de-risking actions to senior management.
- Monitors client, client industry, and regulatory agencies for changes that may affect the client's portfolio, counterparty creditworthiness, or documentation enforceability.
- Reviews and continuously monitors the performance of existing counterparty relationships across derivatives, repo, FX, precious metals, and structured note exposures.
- Acts as key credit recommender for Global Markets and FI trading products transactions, including new ISDA/CSA, GMRA, and GMSLA relationships, line increases, and bespoke structures.
- Understands the complexity of trading products transactions and related risk (credit, market, operational, legal, compliance, and documentation), with depth in derivatives exposure modelling.
- Balances BMO’s risk appetite with the client's hedging, funding, and investment needs when making credit recommendations across the Global Markets platform.
- Works with Legal to negotiate counterparty documentation including ISDA Master Agreements, CSAs (including one-way CSAs with central banks and SSAs), GMRAs, GMSLAs, and confirmations for structured trades ensuring netting enforceability across relevant Asia-Pacific jurisdictions.
- Oversee Business Analysts and Associates supporting the Asia book; reviews and guides their credit monitoring workload, portfolio reporting, and development.
- Assists in monitoring country risk across the Asia-Pacific region, coordinating with FI coverage and Global Markets on name-level and sovereign-level risk signals.
- Identifies opportunities for increased efficiency and improved service to internal and external clients, including streamlining the credit approval path for high-volume, standardized trading products business and optimizing the use of collateral and netting across the portfolio.
- Acts as a positive change agent to drive improved efficiency and effectiveness across the counterparty portfolio management function in Asia and the wider global portfolio.
- Maintains awareness of all BMO products and services offered to Global Markets and FI clients and facilitates means of receiving continuous updates from desk heads and product specialists.
- Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal stakeholders including SSA cross-sell, new booking entity expansion, and regional platform build-out.
- Builds effective relationships with internal stakeholders i.e. trading desk heads, FI coverage bankers, legal, operations, collateral management, and Head Office credit and portfolio management.
- Works with specialists as needed to support successful deal completion, including legal (ISDA negotiation), market risk (exposure modelling), and operations (collateral and settlement).
