You'll also receive our local Japan benefits package and opportunities to develop your career within a growing international semiconductor technology business.
Your AFM expertise could help shape the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing.
If you work with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), semiconductor metrology, advanced instrumentation or nanoscale measurement, we'd like to talk to you.
At Infinitesima, we're developing AFM technology specifically for the demands of semiconductor manufacturing.
Our technology helps semiconductor manufacturers measure and understand increasingly complex structures at the nanoscale, and we're growing our Applications Engineering capability in Japan.
We're interested in people at all career stages, from talented graduates and early-career scientists through to experienced Applications Engineers and recognised AFM or semiconductor metrology specialists.
The role
You'll become one of the technical links between Infinitesima's AFM technology and our semiconductor customers in Japan.
Depending on your experience, you'll:
Develop and optimise AFM measurement methodologies
Work directly with semiconductor customers on complex metrology challenges
Develop measurement recipes, workflows and applications
Analyse nanoscale measurement data and communicate your findings
Troubleshoot challenging customer applications
Conduct technical demonstrations and proof-of-capability work
Deliver technical training and consultation
Feed customer insights back into our Product and Engineering teams
Collaborate internationally with scientists, engineers and commercial colleagues
Help influence the development of future semiconductor metrology technology
For experienced hires, there is scope to become a recognised technical authority within our global Applications Engineering organisation.
Who we're looking for
Experienced candidates
You may already be working as an:
Applications Engineer / Application Engineer
Field Applications Engineer
Semiconductor Metrology Engineer
AFM Applications Scientist
AFM Engineer
SPM Engineer
Process Engineer
Equipment Engineer
Metrology Engineer
Customer Applications Engineer
Technical Support Engineer
Experience with AFM or SPM is particularly attractive.
We'd also love to hear from semiconductor professionals working with:
Advanced semiconductor metrology
Wafer inspection or characterisation
Thin-film or surface measurement
Nanotechnology
Advanced scientific instrumentation
Semiconductor process development
Semiconductor equipment
You don't need to tick every box.
Specialist people rarely fit neatly into a job description.
Graduates and early-career scientists
Already getting hands-on with AFM, SPM or nanoscale characterisation at university or during postgraduate research?
Don't assume you need years of semiconductor industry experience.
We'd particularly like to hear from graduates, Master's and PhD candidates in:
Physics
Applied Physics
Materials Science
Nanoscience / Nanotechnology
Semiconductor Engineering
Electronic Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Surface Science
Related scientific or engineering disciplines
Research or practical laboratory experience involving AFM/SPM, surface characterisation or advanced instrumentation could be a great starting point.
Japan location and travel
This bit matters, so we're being upfront.
This is not a remote or hybrid position.
You'll work on-site at our customer location every working day
You must be willing and able to relocate within reasonable travelling distance of the customer site
The role involves up to 50% domestic and international travel once fully trained.
You'll work closely with colleagues across Japan, the UK and our wider global organisation
All our Global Apps colleagues come to our HQ in beautiful Oxfordshire for their 3-week induction so that you can get to know your new team, build your skills and make new friends.
Infinitesima provides travel and accommodation support for this initial UK training
If international exposure, customer-facing technical problem solving and being close to leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing sounds exciting rather than daunting, you'll probably enjoy this role.
Why Infinitesima?
This isn't Applications Engineering where you're simply supporting an established product.
You'll be joining a growing technology company tackling measurement problems created by the increasing complexity of semiconductor manufacturing.
That means:
Genuinely differentiated AFM technology
Direct exposure to advanced semiconductor manufacturing
Complex technical problems rather than routine support
International collaboration
Significant customer interaction
Global travel and career exposure
Close relationships with Product, Engineering and scientific teams
The opportunity to become a highly specialised semiconductor metrology expert
If you're already an AFM specialist, we'd particularly like to hear from you.
There aren't many of you. We know that.
Right to work in Japan
Candidates must already have the legal right to work in Japan at the time of application.
We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.
Our interview process
We want the process to give you a genuine opportunity to understand us as well as allowing us to understand you.
Stage 1
45-minute remote interview
A conversation about your technical background, experience and what you're looking for next.
Stage 2
Approximately 2.5 hours, normally remote
We will be exploring:
Technical capability
Problem solving
Presentation skills
Communication
Ways of working
Where one of our global colleagues is available locally in Japan, we may arrange the second stage face-to-face instead.
We'll work around the time difference between Japan and the UK as far as reasonably possible.
Casual interview attire is absolutely fine.
If you'd prefer not to maintain eye contact or would feel more comfortable turning your camera off after introductions during a remote interview, that's fine too. If there's another reasonable adjustment that would help you perform at your best, please tell us.
