Hardware/Software Engineer Intern - Displays Engineering

Join Dell Technologies' Displays Engineering Team as a Hardware/Software Engineer Intern and contribute to the development of leading monitor display solutions. This 6-month internship offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience across the full hardware-software stack, working on embedded systems, firmware development, and display technologies.

Our displays engineering team is responsible for developing and validating innovative display products that lead and challenge industry standards. We combine hardware expertise with embedded software development to create robust, high-performance display solutions.

What You'll Achieve

As a Hardware/Software Engineer Intern, you will work on real-world embedded systems projects, collaborating with experienced engineers to:

Develop and test firmware for display control systems using C/C++ or PythonDesign and implement hardware-software interfaces using microcontrollers and embedded LinuxWrite and execute test plans to validate display functionality, performance, and compatibilityDevelop Linux-based diagnostic and control applications for display testing and validationCollaborate with hardware design teams to troubleshoot and resolve hardware-software integration issuesDocument technical specifications, test procedures, and engineering solutions

What You’ll Do

During your internship, you may contribute to projects including:

Display Firmware Development – Work on embedded firmware for display microcontrollers, implementing communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART) and control logic for display parameters such as brightness, contrast, and color temperatureVideo Interface Implementation – Develop and test drivers or firmware for display interfaces including DisplayPort, HDMI, USB-C Alt Mode, and USB 3.0, with focus on signal integrity and protocol complianceDisplay Diagnostics Tool Development – Create Linux-based Python or C++ applications for automated display testing, including EDID parsing, resolution detection, color accuracy validation, and power consumption monitoringHot-Plug Detection & Power Management – Implement firmware logic for detecting display connections/disconnections and managing power states, including sleep modes and wake-up sequencesDisplay Performance Testing – Develop test scripts and automation using Python or C++ to measure response time, color accuracy, brightness uniformity, and compatibility across various graphics cards and operating systemsHardware Bring-Up & Debugging – Participate in validation and troubleshooting of new display subsystems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG debuggers to identify and resolve hardware-firmware integration issuesLinux Driver Development – Develop or enhance Linux kernel drivers or user-space libraries for display control and monitoring on Raspberry Pi or embedded Linux platforms

Essential Requirements

Master's degree (pursuing or completed) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldStrong programming skills in C/C++ or PythonLinux proficiency – experience with Linux scripting or developing Linux applicationsSolid understanding of computer architecture, microprocessors, and embedded systems fundamentalsAbility to read and interpret technical datasheets and hardware documentationStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Desirable Requirements

Hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or other microcontroller platformsExperience developing firmware or embedded driversFamiliarity with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG debuggers)Experience with display technologies or video interfaces (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C Alt Mode)Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and agile development practicesPrevious internship or project experience in embedded systems or hardware development

 What We Offer

Hands-on experience working with real hardware and embedded systemsMentorship from experienced hardware and software engineersExposure to industry-standard tools and development practices
