Hermeus
Los Angeles, CA
On-site

Who this role is best for

Aerodynamics and structures students with strong analytical skills will find this engineering internship with a focus on supersonic aircraft development and cross-functional collaboration.

Best fit for

  • Undergraduate or graduate STEM students with a focus on aerospace and structural analysis
    — “currently enrolled in a STEM program at an accredited college or university”
  • Candidates with hands-on experience in finite element analysis and aeroelastic behavior
    — “Solve structural static and dynamic problems through hand calculations, finite element analysis, or test data”
  • Individuals who thrive in collaborative, mission-driven environments
    — “work closely with the aerodynamics and structures teams”

Things to consider

  • Compensation is based on degree level, not just experience or skills
    — “Final compensation will be determined based on degree level.”
  • Eligibility is restricted to U.S. persons due to export control compliance
    — “must either be a “U.S. person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.62 or otherwise eligible”

How to stand out

  • Highlight specific projects involving dynamic simulations or flutter analysis in your resume
    — “evaluate flutter behaviors to support aircraft development”
  • Demonstrate experience with defining external loads from flight scenarios
    — “External loads definition from flight maneuvers, gust, takeoff and landing”
  • Showcase your ability to work in cross-functional teams through past experiences
    — “demonstrated ability to work within cross-functional teams”
  • Emphasize your communication skills with examples of technical reports or presentations
    — “Excellent written and verbal communication skills”

About the role

Original posting from Hermeus via Lever

Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company reclaiming the lost art of rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world today. By prioritizing relentless hardware iteration, we deliver high-speed systems at the pace of the modern battlefield. We work with the Department of War to provide the high-speed capabilities our nation and its allies need to maintain a durable, asymmetric advantage.

As a Loads and Dynamics Engineering Intern you will support the development of our supersonic aircraft programs. This individual will work closely with the aerodynamics and structures teams to develop and refine external loads, create dynamic simulations, validate analysis through testing and flight, and evaluate flutter behaviors to support aircraft development.

Spring: around 12-16 weeks (January - April)

Summer: around 10 weeks (May - August)

Responsibilities::

  • Solve structural static and dynamic problems through hand calculations, finite element analysis, or test data
  • External loads definition from flight maneuvers, gust, takeoff and landing for use in structural design and analysis
  • Generation of vehicle finite element model to assess static and dynamic load cases
  • Characterization of aeroelastic effects such as flutter
  • Definition of random vibration environments from buffet and engine dynamics

Minimum Requirements::

  • Practical experience through internships, studies or projects.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a STEM program at an accredited college or university (undergraduate student in your third or fourth year of study, or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program).
  • Strong understanding of engineering first principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within cross-functional teams.
  • Enthusiasm for aviation and Hermeus's mission.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • GPA of 3.0 or above.

The hourly rate listed for this internship is intended as a general guideline. Final compensation will be determined based on degree level.

Benefits:

Time Off: Interns are eligible for 5 days of sick leave and unpaid time off.

Office Perks: Weekly paid office lunches and fully stocked breakrooms.
