ABOUT US

Harmattan AI is a next-generation defense prime building autonomous and scalable defense systems. Following the close of a $200M Series B, valuing the company at $1.4 billion, we are expanding our teams and capabilities to deliver mission-critical systems to allied forces.

Our work is guided by clear values: building technologies with real-world impact, pursuing excellence in everything we do, setting ambitious goals, and taking on the hardest technical challenges. We operate in a demanding environment where rigor, ownership, and execution are expected.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Mechatronics Engineer covers both ends of the tooling and equipment scope at the Wissous production plant — from a simple assembly jig or inspection fixture to a full automated cell. You will contribute to structuring a greenfield drone production facility scaling fast, designing the mechanical structure of tools and equipment and making sure it works as one coherent system with its sensors, actuators, and controls. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to see their designs on the line fast, in a high-tempo environment where every contribution is visible and every improvement counts. The role reports to the Head of Automation & Industrialisation

RESPONSIBILITIES

Tooling Design (Jigs & Fixtures)

  • Design production jigs, fixtures, and manual tooling (assembly jigs, positioning fixtures, control/inspection tooling) under SolidWorks, from concept to manufacturing-ready 3D models and drawings.
  • Produce full technical documentation: manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and assembly/use instructions for each tool.
  • Integrate ESD, operator safety, and ergonomics requirements into every tooling design.

Production Equipment Design (Mechatronics)

  • Design the mechanical elements of automated cells and equipment (frames, supports, motion axes, grippers/end-effectors, guarding, enclosures) under SolidWorks.
  • Select and size mechanical components (linear guides, actuators, couplings, transmission elements) for reliability and maintainability in continuous production use.
  • Work with the Auto & Digital pole to integrate mechanical designs with sensors, actuators, pneumatics, and controls, so the mechanical and automation sides are designed together.
  • Support commissioning and debugging of equipment on the shop floor, iterating quickly on feedback from the line before releasing for production use.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Initiative

  • Work hand in hand with Industrialisation Engineers and Methods Engineers to define tooling and equipment needs and challenge proposed technical solutions.
  • Proactively identify and propose improvement opportunities on the production lines — cycle time, ergonomics, tooling/equipment reliability — without waiting for a formal request.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in mechanical design, mechatronics, industrial engineering, or equivalent.
  • Strong, proven 3D design experience with very good command of SolidWorks
  • Experience designing jigs, fixtures, or industrial tooling — ideally in a series production environment.
  • Working knowledge of the automation side of mechatronics: sensors, actuators, basic pneumatics/electrical integration, enough to design mechanics that integrate cleanly with a control system.
  • Autonomous and resourceful, comfortable operating in an agile, fast-paced environment without sacrificing quality.
  • Clear communicator, able to interface directly with Industrialisation, Methods, and Automation teams.
  • Good communication in French and English — able to interact clearly with operators and engineers
  • Hands-on mindset; at ease on the shopfloor, not just behind a screen

Preferred Skills

  • Experience designing or integrating cobot/robotic cells, automated test benches, or custom production equipment.
  • Exposure to a ramp-up, startup, or new product introduction context is a plus, not a prerequisite
  • Prior exposure to ESD-controlled environments or production tooling standards
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments where processes are still being built

We look forward to hearing how you can help shape the future of autonomous defense systems at Harmattan AI.
