About the role

Original posting from Solutus Legal Search via Lever

Our client, an established technology company providing cloud-based communications and related technology solutions to businesses and consumers, is seeking a Privacy and Regulatory Counsel to join its high performing legal team. This is a highly visible position with responsibility for a broad range of regulatory, privacy, consumer protection, and emerging technology matters, including artificial intelligence.

Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer, this attorney will serve as a trusted advisor to business leaders and cross-functional teams, providing practical legal guidance on evolving regulatory requirements and helping the organization manage risk while supporting innovation and business growth. The role combines substantive responsibility for domestic and international privacy and regulatory matters with opportunities to advise on complex commercial transactions and broader corporate legal issues.

This role can be remote. For those residing outside of the Bay Area, there is minimal travel required (4x/year to HQ). For those who live in the Bay Area, the company offers group office lunches on Tuesdays, so participation those days for team connection is strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead U.S. and international data privacy and consumer protection initiatives, including compliance with GDPR, CPRA, HIPAA, COPPA, PIPEDA, and other applicable privacy and data protection laws.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain privacy policies, governance frameworks, and related compliance programs.
  • Assess legal, regulatory, and operational risks associated with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, including data governance, confidentiality, intellectual property ownership, and evolving AI regulatory frameworks.
  • Advise business and product teams on complex legal and regulatory matters, translating evolving requirements into practical, commercially oriented guidance.
  • Support compliance with European Union and member-state privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection requirements.
  • Provide legal analysis and guidance on regulatory matters involving agencies such as the FCC and FTC and other applicable regulatory authorities.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to identify and mitigate legal risks while enabling new products, services, and business initiatives.
  • Help advance the legal department's use of AI and technology to improve legal drafting, contract review, regulatory analysis, and workflow efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of responsible AI policies and internal guidelines governing the use of emerging technologies.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements and provide counsel on general corporate and business matters as needed.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and proactively advise the business on their potential impact.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
  • At least 5 years of legal experience, including in-house experience and law firm experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and international privacy and data protection laws, including GDPR, CPRA, COPPA, and PIPEDA.
  • Experience advising on complex regulatory frameworks, including matters involving the FCC, FTC, and HIPAA.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or supporting privacy, regulatory compliance, and governance programs.
  • Experience evaluating legal issues involving artificial intelligence, data governance, cybersecurity, or other emerging technologies is highly desirable.
  • Experience advising businesses in regulated industries is strongly preferred.
  • Commercial contracting experience, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating sophisticated agreements.
  • Ability to interpret complex and evolving legal requirements and translate them into clear, practical guidance for business stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, and relationship-management skills.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, business judgment, and the ability to navigate ambiguity and competing priorities.

The ideal candidate is a business-minded, collaborative attorney who combines strong technical legal skills with sound judgment and a practical approach to problem-solving. This person will be intellectually curious, comfortable navigating evolving regulatory frameworks, and interested in the intersection of law, technology, and innovation. They will be an effective communicator who builds trusted relationships across the business, operates independently, and balances regulatory requirements with commercial objectives.
