ABOUT CHECK

Payroll is broken. It's still running on decades-old infrastructure. We're rebuilding it.

On our team, you'll use creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and grit to simplify the complexity of payroll for thousands of employers of every size, across all industries. We ignore conventional role boundaries in favor of the unique strengths and values each builder brings to our mission: make paying people simple. THE WORK

We're looking for an entrepreneurial Product Manager to lead the discovery and definition of key components within our system, helping us build the most powerful payroll infrastructure and make paying people simple for the businesses our partners serve. This role requires a leader who is excited to dive deep into our technology stack, learn the ins and outs of payroll and tax systems, and design scalable infrastructure that sets a new standard for reliability and efficiency in the payroll industry. You'll collaborate closely with Check leadership, engineers, internal teams, and our partners to deliver innovative, high-impact products that advance the future of embedded payroll.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Define and prioritize projects that make our payroll infrastructure more powerful and more resilient as we scale
  • Lead product execution with a bold, opinionated approach, pushing the boundaries of payroll solutions while addressing customer challenges with urgency
  • Engage with cross-functional experts from our business, engineering, and payroll operations teams to align on strategic goals
  • Connect directly with Check’s partners—software companies across diverse verticals—to understand their daily challenges and identify opportunities for scaling their payroll businesses
  • Develop a comprehensive roadmap in partnership with engineering and operations, outlining actionable strategies to build the infrastructure our partners need to scale

MANY BACKGROUNDS COULD FIT THIS ROLE, BUT IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING

  • 6+ years of product management experience in technology companies serving enterprise businesses
  • Experience in complex domains with intricate regulatory and operational requirements; payroll and tax knowledge is a plus
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional product initiatives that deliver significant business impact
  • Ability to thrive in high-ambiguity environments, demonstrating adaptability and problem-solving skills
  • Dedication to customer needs with a commitment to high-quality execution
  • Skills in collaborating with diverse stakeholders to drive alignment and positive outcomes
  • Willingness to attend our annual 3-day company offsite in the fall

TRAVEL & OFFICE POLICY

The Check team is distributed across the US. Roles can be remote, hybrid, or based in one of our offices in New York City or San Francisco. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons throughout year. All Checketeers gather in the spring for our annual 3-day company retreat.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there are regular happy hours, game nights, and other in-person events.

Remote work at Check requires the ability to perform all responsibilities without distraction or disruption, while maintaining quality, effective communication, and productivity.
