About the role

Original posting from Meter via Ashby

Deliver the best firewall, routing, and SD-WAN solution on the market by working with brilliant, hard-working, and experienced engineers. This role comes with significant responsibility, autonomy, and direct impact on customer outcomes. Specifically, you will work on features for our firewall, such as Site-to-Site VPN (thousands of hubs and spokes), ACLs, BGP over WAN, BGP over AutoVPN, DNS security, IDS/IPS, etc.

Zooming out, Meter is a vertically integrated stack from ISP, Firewall, Routing, SD-WAN, Security, Wireless, Switching, Mobile, and Power. This vertical integration allows us to deliver great networking and outcomes for our customers.

Meter’s goal is to build the best-in-class product for each platform and that only happens when our hardware and software teams work together.

Meter’s architecture is modular at every layer, and this is what allows us to build products and features at a very high velocity (OS, firmware, data plane, control plane, backend/API, and Dashboard/UI/UX). You need to have a thorough understanding of routing, ACLs, NAT, BGP, OSPF, and packet policy.

WHAT YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WILL LOOK LIKE

Meter is a fast-moving environment, and we invest heavily in doers.

In your day-to-day, you will be working with firewall firmware engineers to design features and weigh in the tradeoffs, understand and organize requests from the support team, triage bugs found by the Quality Engineering (QE) team, join QBR calls with a customer, and plan a weekly roadmap with our cofounder.

You should be ready to override your past experiences regarding architecture, feature velocity, team collaboration, and product quality.

You will collaborate with the backend team building our APIs, frontend team building our Dashboard, and models team building our autonomous model. You’re expected to learn how these layers work in the first 12 months at Meter.

You will collaborate with the QE team to make sure what we release is exceptionally stable and easy to deploy.

Every discussion you have, every decision you make, should be in service of customer outcomes.

WHO YOU ARE

You've built products in the enterprise security or networking industry, and you deeply understand how IT administrators and network engineers use products. You know the difficulties managing firewall policies across thousands of devices in critical environments.

But more than domain knowledge, what makes someone exceptional in this role is how they work with people and understand customer pain points. You communicate with clarity across technical and non-technical audiences, and bring teams into alignment without needing formal authority. You've shipped incrementally, learned from imperfect v1s, and kept a team pointed in the same direction even when the problem got messier than expected.

You don't need a fully defined playbook to get started. You see a customer's need and run toward it.

To be successful at Meter, you need to have the ability to absorb information quickly, learn fast, make quick decisions, experiment readily, keep an open mind, and work as a team without exception.

WHY METER

The internet runs the world. Every purchase you make, video call you join — it's all packets flowing through networks. But those networks haven't changed for decades. They're brittle, complex, and surprisingly hard to set up in an enterprise space.

We started Meter to build better networks. We had to build everything from the ground up: designing and building our own enterprise hardware, intuitive software, and streamlined operations to deliver great outcomes for our customers. Today, we build and deploy these networks at scale. Ambitious companies and enduring institutions like Bridgewater, Lyft, and Reddit rely on Meter to keep their thousands of employees and locations online and productive.

Our bet is simple: We will all use the internet more than we do today. We have the definitive networking stack to enable businesses to do so as seamlessly and reliably as any modern utility.

COMPENSATION

  • The estimated base salary for this role is between $205,000 – $275,000.
  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Meter's equity plan.
