About the role:

As part of the Employer Registration team, you’ll support Collective members through payroll tax registrations, SUI/SUTA account setup, and state notice resolution for our members. You will register new employers with state and local agencies, confirm that payroll tax accounts and payroll software setups are correct, and work state notices from review to resolution. You will keep members informed at every step.

This seasonal opportunity is ideal for experienced professionals looking for meaningful work with flexibility, whether you want to continue managing your own book of business, prefer seasonal work, or simply don’t want the commitment of a year-round role.

Please note: This is a 12 month seasonal contract.

What you'll do:

  • Register businesses as employers with state and local tax agencies, including state withholding, SUI/SUTA, and other employer tax accounts.
  • Review and resolve state payroll tax notices and agency correspondence, such as SUI rate notices, missing or late filing notices, wage report discrepancies, penalty and interest assessments, and balance due notices. Work with Gusto's support team on any filing or resolution on behalf of the member.
  • Manage registration and compliance requests while meeting service level expectations. These include member relocations, multi-state hiring, business information updates, and account closures.
  • Manage payroll platform ownership during member onboarding and offboarding, and work with support teams on ownership and troubleshooting issues.
  • Partner with internal teams and state agencies on complex issues, maintain process documentation and knowledge base articles, and suggest improvements to our tools and the member experience.

What you'll bring:

  • 1-2+ years of hands-on experience with multi-state payroll tax registrations, including state withholding and SUTA/SUI account setup
  • Working knowledge of local tax withholding, state and local reciprocity rules, state registration requirements, and filing frequencies
  • Practical understanding of Secretary of State (SOS) foreign entity registration and Registered Agent operations
  • Comfortable using AI tools to speed up daily work, such as auditing payroll setups, checking tax rate calculations, and triaging and summarizing cases
  • Familiarity with payroll platforms (Gusto, ADP, etc..), and ticketing tools (JIRA, ZenDesk)
  • Resourceful, detail oriented, and collaborative with comfort in change and ambiguity in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Collaborative mindset, clear written and verbal communication
  • Bonus Points for: CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC credentials, experience at a payroll provider, PEO, or payroll tax service firm
