About the role

JOIN THE TEAM BRINGING ADVANCED AUTONOMY TO THE BUILT WORLD

At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team includes veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country, improving safety on job sites and accelerating schedules on critical infrastructure projects.

We're not here debating the future of AI. We're deploying it in the real world. In just two years, we've raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to do meaningful work on hard problems, we'd love to have you join us.

The Role

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and multi-faceted commercial attorney to lead Bedrock’s transactions practice as Bedrock shapes its contractor, OEM and technical partnership strategies in a rapidly growing and transformative category. If you’re passionate about creating industry-first deal frameworks, commercial counseling, and changing the way the world builds, come and join this bold team.

This Senior Counsel, Commercial Transactions Lead will own and support a wide range of matters, including drafting and negotiating new agreements that govern contractor engagement, autonomous software and service offerings, and commercial partnerships with a broad range of ecosystem participants; and counseling business clients on data, intellectual property, insurance, safety and privacy principles, including in completely novel environments. You’ll also support strategic programs as a critical team member, working closely with cross-functional business colleagues to launch innovative products and initiatives — commercializing technology in a partnered ecosystem that builds on the real world starts with a transaction; it doesn’t end there.

This position is part of the Bedrock legal team and can be located in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY.

What You’ll Do

  • Bring commercial and tech transactions experience and insight to the team, finding creative solutions to white space issues that arise when introducing new technologies to established industries.
  • Engage and negotiate with external partners with full-view integration of risk and legal controls in commercial agreements and other outward-facing terms.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues on cross-functional teams, integrating your commercial capabilities with guidance across multiple areas — Safety, Product, Intellectual Property, Insurance, Employment and Privacy — to operationalize commercial partnerships and create solutions that allow the business to move quickly and responsibly.
  • Be an active and trusted business partner to the Operations, Engineering and Business Development professionals that launch heavy machinery and construction automation products at Bedrock.
  • Support new product offerings that support the built economy: Deploy your commercial perspective in reviewing related products and programs to ensure commercial, regulatory, and safety considerations flow through those initiatives.

What You’ll Bring

  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state.
  • Minimum of 8 years of commercial legal experience in private practice, in-house and/or government.
  • Commercial and contracting experience in a software- or service-intensive industry across multiple markets, delivering clear, actionable terms for clients, customers and partners.
  • Experience with software services agreements, automated vehicles, construction or scaled fleets.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft contract language efficiently and effectively both with and without the assistance of templates or prior agreements.

Location Requirements

  • Hybrid 2-3x per week in office, New York or San Francisco Bay Area-based
  • Regular in-person collaboration with engineering teams and leadership
  • Occasional travel for company or industry events, and partnership meetings

Preferred Background

  • At least two (2) years of in-house experience is preferred.
  • Experience in an adjacent legal speciality relevant to construction technology or automated vehicle deployments, such as services and support offerings, field-deployed product, regulatory, privacy, insurance, real estate, or intellectual property.
  • Excellent business judgment and high comfort level advising business teams on a wide range of legal issues related to technology and/or software platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly collaborative with both business leaders and legal groups, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner across functions to build consensus.
  • Clear communicator, team orientated, and willing to take initiative while thinking two steps ahead.
  • Confidence and flexibility to operate in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Inquisitiveness, along with the ability to spot issues, get to the heart of a matter, and articulate plans to address them.
  • Passionate about your work and a desire to have a big impact.
  • Enthusiastic about Bedrock and automating the built world!

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY), please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
